Alabama vs. Florida: Nick Saban Should Give the NFL Another Shot

John RozumOct 1, 2011

Current Seattle Seahawks' head coach Pete Carroll is the most recent to be of note, as a college coach who's once again back in the NFL.

With that in mind, should Alabama's Nick Saban give the NFL another shot?

Yes.

And here's why.

His overall college resume consists of 13 bowl appearances in 15 years (excluding 2011), a record of 138-53-1, two national championships and is a two-time coach of the year.

Saban's easily a college football Hall of Famer, especially when your two national championship come from being in the SEC, and each championship was with a different school (LSU 2003, Alabama 2009).

Therefore, we know he's a proven college coach, he's accomplished about everything you can possibly accomplish, so why not try a new challenge?

Well, not so much a new challenge, but a challenge that he failed at after only two seasons.

In 2005 and 2006 he was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins and only had a record of 15-17.

For starters, at least he's not Bobby Petrino who bailed on the Atlanta Falcons midseason, only to lie and then become Arkansas' head coach while the Falcons were left out to dry.

Saban at that time just wasn't ready for the NFL, but then again, neither was Pete Carroll.

Carroll was 6-10 his first stint in the NFL with the New York Jets, but then came back with the New England Patriots in 1997 and was 27-21 with two playoff appearances.

As you can see, that experience allowed him to dominate the college ranks at USC from 2001-2009 and he's back in the NFL with the Seahawks.

2010 was the begin of his third stint and although they only went 7-9, they won the NFC West and then upset the defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round.

Getting back to Saban, he really doesn't have anything left to prove at the college level, much like Carroll, so why not try the NFL again?

Obviously it can't be with the Miami Dolphins, but surely the Cincinnati Bengals or Jacksonville Jaguars would be willing as they'll most likely need a new head coach by season's end.

If Nick Saban doesn't give the NFL another shot, we'll never know what could have been because he'll definitely do better the second time around.

Anyone who can be atop or near the top of the SEC in college football right now on a consistent basis is doing an excellent job. However, it's only fitting to see the best of the best compete at a higher level.

Here's to hoping Nick Saban tries to make it in pro football one more time, because as great as it is to dominate in college, winning in the pros is the ultimate challenge.

And Nick Saban needs another challenge.
