Kentucky vs. LSU: 3 Reasons Heisman Talk Should Hype Tyrann Mathieu

Dan VastaOct 1, 2011

Tyrann Mathieu has turned into one of the most explosive superstars in the country this season with the tenacity that he has brought to the field every single weekend.

Mathieu may be short in stature (5'9") but he makes up for it possessing every single element you need to have as a star in the SEC. Mathieu literally fights on every single down and plays as if it is last.

So, why is Mathieu not among the top Heisman leaders through the first month of the season?

Through the first month of the season you would find it hard pressed to find a better defensive back in college football over Mr. Mathieu.

He talks a ton of trash, but backs it up on every single down where he makes you dirt after he smacks you in the mouth if you are fortunate enough to haul in a pass against him.

The speed, acceleration, quickness and awareness he has is second to none right now and his tipped pass interception against Geno Smith last weekend just showed his versatility.

Whether he is coming on a blitz, taking a few strides back in the secondary or coming up and smoking you in the backfield, Tyrann Mathieu has proven to be one of the best players in the nation.

Heisman!?

As the best defensive player in the nation thus far in the season it is about time you start to put Tyann Mathieu in your top five of the Heisman race.

Sure, Kellen Moore, Marcus Lattimore, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin have been sensational this season but Mathieu has arguably made the most of his opportunities. I mean the kid is a flat out superstar and he is just a sophomore!

Playing corner is no easy task since one small move can cost you six points, but when you are the most electrifying man in college football things come easy for you. Mathieu can make up for a lost step in the blink of an eye and he thrives in doing so. At just 5'9", 175 pounds this superstar defensive back will continue to wreak havoc since teams try to pick on him due to his lack of height.

We thought Mo Clairborne was the top defensive back in the SEC and on the Bayou Bengals but it has been the play from Tyann Mathieu that has lifted this LSU defense into the best in college football.

While Tyrann Mathieu may not win the Heisman or even get invited, he certainly is among the top candidates thus far in the season.

The question remains as to whether or not teams will continue to throw towards his direction. If he brings backs a few pick sixes or perhaps a few more touchdowns on special teams then there is no doubting what Mathieu can accomplish.

This LSU team is loaded with defensive stars, but Mathieu is the clear cut headliner at the moment and if he continues to go bonkers don't be shocked if he does end up in New York.
