Alabama vs Florida: Will Nick Saban or Charlie Weis Ever Go Back to the NFL?
Tonight’s SEC showdown between Alabama and Florida will feature a terrific matchup of coaching minds when Florida offensive coordinator Charlie Weis’ pro-style attack goes up against Nick Saban’s supremely talented Tide defense.
Saban and Weis are two of the top coaching minds in football and both have the championship rings to prove it.
Even though Weis failed to get the job done when he was a head coach at Notre Dame, he’s had enough success in the NFL to solidify his status as a true offensive guru.
Saban, on the other hand, has been just the opposite.
The Alabama head man has been one of college football’s top coaches since the turn of the millennium, however, he just couldn’t replicate that type of success when he was handed an opportunity to lead the Miami Dolphins in the NFL.
It makes you wonder, since Weis had so much success as an offensive assistant in the NFL and since it must irk Saban that he wasn’t able to build a winner in the pros, if either of the two could end up back in the NFL some day.
Saban is a man of pride and you know that it must have been a big blow to his ego that he wasn’t able get it done at the highest level, but if either of these two ever ends up back in the pros, it’s likely going to be Weis.
It came as a bit of a surprise this offseason when Weis left the Kansas City Chiefs, a team that was coming off a playoff season, to move down to Gainesville and join new Florida head coach Will Muschamp’s staff.
So far this season, Weis’ offense has been a success, but you never know if he’s going to get the itch to head back to the pros some day.
Weis learned the hard way that he wasn’t cut out to be a head coach of a major college football program but he’s proving that he has what it takes to be a very successful assistant.
Still, it remains to be seen whether or not this is actually the last stop of the 55-year-old coach’s career.
