Boise State Football: Broncos Stuck in Football Rankings Limbo

Gabe ZaldivarJun 7, 2018

Purgatory or limbo, whatever you want to call it, Boise State is destined to pay for a crime the voters contend they commit every season.

The Broncos are currently sitting at No. 4 in the polls. After a huge win over Nevada, they will again be No. 4 in the nation. Barring upsets over the top clubs in the FBS, Boise State is guaranteed to wallow in their own middling greatness.

The fact is, they have no say in their status. They wait in college football rankings limbo, forever good enough to be top five, but never enough to gain entry into the most private of clubs.

If you were under the impression that a No. 1 school is destined to go wire-to-wire at the top, just as long as they continued to win, you would be wrong.

LSU proved the voters are a forward thinking entity. A lot can be ascertained in a win. The Tigers, ranked No. 2 last week, hopscotched Oklahoma.

The reason was loud and clear. The win over West Virginia was far more convincing than the Sooner's victory over Missouri.

So as we continue in this world without playoffs, we understand that wins not only mater, but the size, scope and breadth does as well...to a point.

Boise State and the Mountain West are forever kept at arms length. I am not about to disagree in total. The conference is hardly the pinnacle of tough college football matchups.

Yet we grade other teams based on the size and strength they show on other teams. The same just isn't true for the Broncos.

If all other things remain equal, and the Broncos beat Nevada by 50, we would merely clap our hands and claim they are a very good top-five team.

At what point do they get the LSU treatment? It's a question that needs to be asked as we are forced to merely buy into polls, rankings and the BCS.

Life is good for Boise State. They have managed to be a top offensive power once again. I just wonder if they will ever get out of the box we keep them in every year.
