Nebraska vs. Wisconsin: Badgers Welcome Cornhuskers to Big Ten with a Beating
This weekend the Nebraska Cornhuskers travel to Camp Randall Stadium in Wisconsin to take on the Badgers in their first ever Big 10 conference game.
Unfortunately for Nebraska, currently Wisconsin is the team to beat in the conference.
For years Wisconsin has been a team with an elite defense and phenomenal running game.
This year, they have added a new element. The Badgers now have a top-tier passing attack to add to the mix.
North Carolina State graduate Russell Wilson now leads Wisconsin into battle on Saturdays. So far this season Wilson has completed 75.8 percent of his passes for 1,136 yards. He has thrown for 11 touchdowns and only one interception.
What's amazing is that these stats would point towards the team having a pass-heavy scheme on offense. Actually, Wisconsin has run the ball almost twice as much as they have thrown it through four weeks of play.
Montee Ball and James White have led a rushing attack that many questioned heading into the season. There were many doubts after the loss of key components such as John Moffitt and Gabe Carimi on the offensive line.
The two have put those thoughts to rest. Ball has 360 yards and nine touchdowns. White has run for 303 yards and three touchdowns.
As a whole, the Badgers have 982 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns.
This is an offense averaging 48.5 points per game. Although it hasn't been against the most prestigious of opponents, the total still puts them as the sixth-best scoring offense in the nation.
This weekend they will be going up against a Nebraska defense that has actually struggled at times. In Week 3 they allowed Washington to put up 38 points. The inconsistency has been a big issue so far this year.
On offense, the Cornhuskers have relied heavy on the running game. Running back Rex Burkhead and Taylor Martinez have run over opponents so far this year.
That won't be the case Saturday night.
On top of having the sixth-best scoring offense, the Badgers also have the third-best scoring defense. They are allowing just 8.5 points per game.
In particular, they are allowing just 2.9 yards per carry for opposing offenses.
It's going to take a lot of luck for Nebraska to come away with a win against Wisconsin.
Wisconsin isn't just the best team in the Big 10, they are possibly future national champions.
