Michael Floyd: NFL Scouting Report for Notre Dame Wideout
Michael Floyd is one of the best wide receivers in all of college football and is the best player on the Notre Dame offense.
There is a deep class of receivers in the 2012 draft class, and he does not want to be one of the forgotten one on draft day, when other players like Justin Blackmon and Alshon Jeffrey will likely go high in the first round.
Let’s break down Floyd’s profile to see where he stands, and where he may end up.
Pros
1 of 3At 6'3" and 227 pounds, Floyd has great size for a future at wide receiver. Many cornerbacks simply won’t be able to match up well against him and will have much trouble jamming him on the line, at the very least.
He is also a fantastic run blocker, though Notre Dame’s system has somewhat limited his experience there.
In watching his highlight film, it is obvious that Floyd has great hands and routinely makes a variety of tough catches in the air.
The thing that is the most impressive is his ability to go up and get jump balls.
Cons
2 of 3The downside to Floyd’s frame is that he is not the fastest or most elusive receiver in the 2012 class. He currently runs a 4.54 40-yard dash and does not show breakaway ability in close quarters. Once he gets going, though, he can run through and past people with ease.
The other major concern is his character. He had to be reinstated by head coach Brian Kelly after his third alcohol-related offense—the first two were drinking underage and the last was a DUI.
As a college student myself, I won’t play dumb that college kids drink, but this repeated behavior may cause some teams to shy away from Floyd.
Conclusion
3 of 3Floyd is one of the biggest receivers in the draft with excellent frame and talent. If he can improve his acceleration and show coaches that his legal troubles are behind him, expect him to be a first-round choice.
The best NFL comparison to him is Anquan Boldin and if Floyd’s career turns out anything like Boldin’s, he will be one the most productive receivers in the NFL.
He could go very high if a team is in particular need of a big, blocking wide receiver, but there are more explosive receivers this year than in recent memory, so expect Floyd to be taken in the late first round or early second round by a team like the Jacksonville Jaguars.
