College Football Picks Week 5: Florida, Nebraska and Virginia Tech Will Falter

Matt FaulconerJun 7, 2018

Week 5's action kicked off last night, as the Pittsburgh Panthers embarrassed No. 16 South Florida to open the Big East season.

South Florida won't be the only top-25 team losing this week, as these three teams will find themselves dejected in the locker room on Saturday.

The Florida Gators meet No. 3 Alabama at the swamp in what figures to be one of the biggest games of the weekend.

Both teams are 4-0, but the Alabama Crimson Tide come off a blowout victory over Arkansas and have played a more difficult schedule to this point. Arkansas entered the game against the Crimson Tide as one of the most dynamic offenses in college football, but they were absolutely blindsided by the Alabama defense.

It won't matter who is the offensive coordinator for the Gators—the Alabama defense will smother them and stay unblemished.

Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Cornhuskers are a terrific team, there is no denying that, but this week they run into one of the most underrated teams in college football.

Wisconsin should be ranked higher than No. 7; they are one of the teams to beat in college football with Russell Wilson at the helm. They can run, they can throw and the defense is exceptional.

They will be just too much for the Cornhuskers to handle on the road, and Wisconsin will be one step closer to winning the Big Ten.

Welcome to the conference, Nebraska.

Virginia Tech Hokies

The most overrated team in the country year in and year out takes on the Clemson Tigers this weekend. The Tigers were too much for No. 23 Florida State last weekend, and too much for the Auburn Tigers before that.

Hokies quarterback Logan Thomas wishes he could be as good as Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd, who has torched every team he has faced this year.

Thomas and VT are lucky to have started the season with such a soft schedule, or they would be on the outside of the top 25 looking in.

After this week, they should fall significantly in the rankings.
