College Football Week 5: 8 Top 25 Teams on Upset Alert
This weekend features a lot of tough conference matchups.
The Big Ten has a matchup between No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 8 Nebraska that will likely decide one of the participants in the Big Ten Championship game.
The ACC is in that same boat, with No. 13 Clemson traveling to No. 11 Virginia Tech.
Then, SEC fans get to see a potential SEC Championship game preview when No. 3 Alabama travels to the swamp to take on No. 12 Florida.
So, it should be a fun weekend with a lot of marquee matchups to watch.
With that being said, here are eight top-25 teams on upset alert this weekend.
No. 3 Alabama (at No. 12 Florida)
1 of 9The Gators are back and ready to prove they have moved on from the Tim Tebow era.
But the Tide are eager to preserve their national-title hopes.
This rivalry appears to be back and better than ever this year and should be fun to watch.
The Gators' defense is only allowing nine points per game, so if they can stop Trent Richardson, they have a shot of pulling the upset.
No. 7 Wisconsin (vs. No. 8 Nebraska)
2 of 9Wisconsin hasn't really faced a tough opponent yet.
They've beaten up on nobodies like Northern Illinois, Oregon State, UNLV and South Dakota.
I'm interested in seeing how they do in their first real test.
Taylor Martinez and company might just have what it takes to shred the untested Badgers defense.
No. 10 South Carolina (vs. Auburn)
3 of 9The Auburn defense has been terrible this year, but the Tigers have found ways to win.
This game is going to come down to whether or not South Carolina can get a lead and protect it.
If the Gamecocks get a two-score lead, they can grind the clock down with Marcus Lattimore.
But, if the Tigers get the lead, it'll be interesting to see how Steve Spurrier tries to get his troops back in the game.
No. 11 Virginia Tech (vs. No. 13 Clemson)
4 of 9Clemson has already beaten Auburn and No. 23 Florida State.
They look to pull off a trifecta of upsets this week as they take on the Hokies.
Virginia Tech had better be careful. Their weak schedule hasn't provided much of a challenge so far, while the Tigers have been tested week in and week out.
This will probably be the Hokies' toughest challenge all season, and it'll be interesting to see whether or not they are up to the task.
No. 14 Texas A&M (vs. No. 18 Arkansas)
5 of 9The Aggies just lost a heartbreaker to No. 5 Oklahoma State, and now they have to turn around and play one of their future SEC rivals.
That Arkansas SEC defense is going to be much tougher than anything they've faced so far this season.
That probably spells trouble for Ryan Tannehill and company, who are used to weak Big 12 defenses.
No. 15 Baylor (at Kansas State)
6 of 9The Baylor defense allowed 48 points to an inexperienced TCU offense in Week 1, so I'm not sure how well they'll do against their second legitimate offense.
Kansas State is 3-0 and averages 220 rushing yards per game.
They'll put up plenty of points against Baylor.
Baylor will be relying on Robert Griffin III to keep them in the game. We'll see if he's up to the task.
No. 17 Texas (at Iowa State)
7 of 9Texas lost to lowly Iowa State last season, so they have to prove they are back by beating the Cyclones this season.
The Cyclones are a surprising 3-0, so anything is possible in this game.
The Longhorns will need a strong effort from an offense that only scored 17 points against BYU.
This won't be as easy as it looks for Texas.
No. 20 TCU (vs. SMU)
8 of 9TCU failed their only tough test of the season so far in Week 1 against Baylor, though they did nearly pull off an amazing comeback.
But the defense has been bad this year—not a good sign heading into a game against SMU.
The Mustangs throw for more than 320 yards a game and will ache to show they deserve consideration for acceptance into the Big 12.
5 Top-25 Teams That Will Cruise to Victory
9 of 9No. 2 Oklahoma (vs. Ball State)
No. 4 Boise State (vs. Nevada)
No. 6 Stanford (vs. UCLA)
No. 19 Michigan (vs. Minnesota)
No. 21 Georgia Tech (at North Carolina State)
