Boston Red Sox: An Open Invitation to Hop off the Bandwagon

Raj PrashadOct 1, 2011

It's October and for the second-straight year the Boston Red Sox are nowhere to be found.

If you aren’t a die-hard, now would be a good time to jump ship.

The Red Sox fell victim to the worst September collapse in MLB history. Terry Francona, former manager of the Red Sox that brought two World Series titles in eight years, is gone. Now, reports are circulating that Theo Epstein is ready to jump ship to the Chicago Cubs.

ESPN and other major media organizations have forced fans to choose sides.

Who was better, Tyson or Ali?

Which team do you like, the Lakers or the Celtics?

Which player will be the best of all-time, Kobe, LeBron, or Michael Jordan?

This is no exception. Fans had to make a decision, Boston or New York?

The result allowed fans to follow the Red Sox through the playoffs, but not through the 162-game season. They have no idea who guys like Ryan Kalish, Jose Iglesias or Ryan Lavarnway are.

Most Red Sox fans don’t know the detailed history of the organization and it shows. The “pink hats” that scour ball parks when the Sox come to town, the crisp Carl Crawford jerseys, and the winning atmosphere Boston has brought to baseball in the last eight years is what draws fans, not the way these guys play the game or even knowing what it means to be a Boston Red Sox fan.

They have no idea who Bill Buckner or Buckey Dent is. Not even why we hate Aaron Boone so much.

These are only a few examples of the pain and suffering being a Boston fan brings. When you’re a Red Sox fan, you live and die with them, but if you’re not ready to fall with this organization, the Yankees are always looking for more "fans."
