5 Reasons Kellen Moore Means More to BSU Than Anyone Else Means to Other Schools

Randy ChambersOct 1, 2011

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore is one of the best quarterbacks in college football right now and will go down in history as one of the greatest. He has taken the Boise State program to new heights.

But just how valuable is he?

Here are five reasons that Kellen Moore is more valuable to Boise State than any other player is to other schools.

Passing Efficiency Rating of 168

1 of 5

I agree with a ton of other people out there that the passer rating is one of the most overrated stats when evaluating quarterback talent. But when you have the the fourth highest in college football, it's worth taking a look at.

Only Ryan Dinwiddie, Tim Tebow and Sam Bradford have a higher passer rating than Kellen Moore does. Yes, that means that it's higher than future No. 1 pick Andrew Luck, Ben Roethilsberger, Colt McCoy and any other great quarterbacks you want to throw out there.

Overrated stat, sure, but you can't deny being ahead of some of those names.

69 Percent Completion Percentage

You can trash Kellen Moore and his throwing mechanics all you want. You can doubt how good or bad he'll be at the next level all day long.

But the guy has a career completion percentage of 69 percent which is good for fifth all-time. Considering he threw the ball over 400 times his first two seasons and just shy of 400 last year, that's pretty impressive.

His 79 percent completion percentage so far this year is second in the country, next to Robert Griffin.

Does he have a throwing motion that won't work in the NFL? Yes.

Does he hold the ball way to low and hold on to the ball to long? Sure.

But in college, he completes the passes and puts the ball where it needs to be.

Great Numbers Without Great Wide Receivers

3 of 5

We all know Moore's numbers by now.

Completion percentage of 69 percent, over 11,000 passing yards, 115 total touchdowns and only 21 interceptions.

Wonderful.

But what makes those numbers even better is what great receivers has he had on his team? Sure, he had Austin Pettis and Titus Young the last two years who were drafted in the NFL but I'm talking great wide receiver.

Moore has never had a Justin Blackmon, Alshon Jeffery or Dez Bryant type receiver that a lot of other quarterbacks have. Somebody that you have to know where he is on the field at all times.

Kellen Moore makes the receivers that play with him better, not the other way around.

He headed into this season with only one receiver that had over 50 career receptions. His numbers didn't fall off at all.

In three games he has 995 passing yards, 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

He Plays for Boise State

4 of 5

Sure, Boise State was known before Kellen Moore stepped on campus. They went to several bowl games, won a few of them and had quite a few double-digit winning seasons.

They were also ranked six times in the Polls.

But let's be serious, Boise State was never as big as they are now. You were never mentioning Boise State and National Championship in the same sentence. Boise was never as high in the polls as they have been the last two seasons and are currently experiencing their best success because of Kellen Moore.

Both Taylor Tharp and Jared Zabransky had their time but Kellen Moore has put this football program on another level with his play.

41-2 Record Speaks Volumes

5 of 5

By the time this season is over, Moore will have the most wins all-time of any other quarterback in college football history.

Sure you can say they play in the weak WAC conference and the competition isn't there but there is no other team in the country that has won more games than Boise has in the last four years. Doesn't matter what conference the team is in or who they play, Boise has won the most.

That has to count for something.

Once you add up all the stats and all the wins, Kellen Moore is the most valuable player in college football.

He took a program and put them on a national level and had them competing with some of college football's best.

Everybody now knows about Boise State and a large part of that is because of Kellen Moore.
