Michigan Football: Where Denard Robinson Ranks Among Rushing QBs in NCAA History

Randy ChambersOct 1, 2011

In college football there are a ton of dual threat quarterbacks. It's one of the things most fans enjoy watching as the quarterbacks take off and run for big gains.

Michigan Wolverines quarterback Denard Robinson is one of college football's top stars. He's one of those players you must watch anytime you are given the chance.

Here are the top five rushing quarterbacks in NCAA history including Denard Robinson.

Bleacher Report is your home for college football for the 2011 season. From scores, news, analysis, live blogs and updates on your favorite teams and the big national games every week, keep it on Bleacher Report for the very latest in college football news.

5. Kent State Joshua Cribbs

1 of 5

Joshua Cribbs is fourth all-time in rushing yards as far as quarterbacks go. He is also Kent State's all-time total offense leader with 10,839 yards. He holds school records for rushing touchdowns with 38 and points scored with 246. He rushed for over 1,000 yards both his freshman and sophomore year.

As a quarterback he wasn't very good completing under 55 percent of his passes and throwing 34 interceptions in four years.

He led the Golden Flashes to a 19-27 record.

Overall stats as a runner: 632 touches, 3,670 rushing yards, 5.8 yard per carry average and 38 rushing touchdowns.

4. Indiana Antwaan Randle El

2 of 5

Antwaan Randle El is third all time in rushing yards on the NCAA list as he never ran under 750 yards during his four year career at Indiana. He is the first player in Division I history to pass for 40 touchdowns and rush for 40 touchdowns in a career.

Although most of those statistics didn't amount to many wins (16-28 during four seasons) you can't deny that he was one of the best running quarterbacks college football has ever seen.

Overall stats as a runner: 857 touches, 3,895 rushing yards, 4.5 yard per carry average and 44 rushing touchdowns.

3. Michigan Denard Robinson

3 of 5

The guy that everybody loves to watch, Denard Robinson.

Robinson holds the NCAA record for most rushing yards by a quarterback in one season he set last year with 1,702. It looks like he could top his own record this season if he continues with the pace that he's on. He holds several Michigan records and had 502 of the Wolverines 532 total yards in a victory over Notre Dame.

Denard Robinson has a chance to climb up this list but I have him at three because there are two running backs that have twice the amount of yards he has.

Current overall stats as a runner: 388 touches, 2,559 rushing yards, 6.6 yard per carry average and 24 rushing touchdowns.

2. Missouri Brad Smith

4 of 5

Bard Smith was labeled as a quarterback for Missouri during his four year career but if you didn't know better, you'd think he was a running back.

Smith ran for a total of 799 times and threw for 835 times. He became the first player in Division I history to pass for over 2,000 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season. He is second all-time on the NCAA rushing leaders list for quarterbacks.

He led the Tigers to a 25-23 record and two bowl berths.

Career overall stats as a runner: 799 touches, 4,289 rushing yards, 5.4 yards per carry average and 45 rushing touchdowns.

1. West Virginia Pat White

5 of 5

Pat White has the most rushing yards all-time for a quarterback, why wouldn't he be No. 1? He is also the most accomplished running quarterback as he is the only starting quarterback ever to win four bowl games. White also has the most wins of any other West Virginia quarterback ever with a 34-8 record.

He is only one of nine NCAA players that has thrown for 200 yards and rushed for 200 yards in the same game.

White holds the No. 1 spot because he is the best overall runner at the quarterback position. He has the numbers and the victories to back it up.

Overall stats as a runner: 684 touches, 4,480 rushing yards, 6.5 yards per carry average and 47 rushing touchdowns.
