College Football Picks Week 5: 9 Teams Remain Perfect Against the Spread

Jeff GrantSep 28, 2011

The sports betting world doesn't concern itself with rankings or straight-up records, as the only thing that matters is a team's against-the-spread success.

Walk into a Las Vegas sports book and you'll often hear the question:  Did they cover?

Nine teams enter this week with perfect ATS records, which is measured against the closing number of each contest.

Let's take a closer look at these teams from a betting perspective.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

1 of 9

You gotta score points to cover any spread, which hasn't been a problem for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, entering this week as the nation's leader in total offense and scoring.

All of the video game-type scoring has led the ACC program to cover its games by a solid 12.9 points a contest.

Georgia Tech has a great chance to improve to 5-0 ATS this week, covering five of the last six meetings at NC State.

Baylor Bears

2 of 9

Baylor Bears quarterback Robert Griffin III captured the imaginations of bettors by orchestrating a 50-48 win over the TCU Horned Frogs as 4.5-point home underdogs in Week 1.

He has led the program to its first 3-0 start since the 2005 season due to throwing for 13 touchdown passes and throwing just 12 incomplete passes.

The Big 12 Conference institution is 2-0 ATS on the season, but that will be tested due to the team's 0-4 straight-up record when playing on ABC against conference foes.

Bettors are wary that the Bears can score another spread victory as 3.5-point road favorites against Kansas State this Saturday.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights

3 of 9

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have scored spread victories in all three of their games thus far, led by offensive exploits of wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who is first nationally in receptions per game and eighth in receiving yards.

Early bettors have moved the team from 2.5-point road underdogs to a slight one-point favorite against the Syracuse Orange Saturday.

An interesting move, considering Rutgers is 1-7 all-time in Big East openers on the road.

Wisconsin Badgers

4 of 9

The Wisconsin Badgers' success this season has led the oddsmaker to make them nine-point home favorites against the Nebraska Cornhuskers this Saturday.

Bettors will find that the Badgers are 3-0-1 ATS this season, covering the last three games since pushing against the UNLV Rebels on the season's opening night.

Head coach Bret Bielema has actually seen his team post a 10-0-1 ATS mark in its last 11 games overall.

Quarterback Russell Wilson is balling and making some noise in the Heisman Trophy race.

Navy Midshipmen

5 of 9

The Navy Midshipmen have been a solid bet for years due to their running game and effort on a weekly basis.

Nothing has changed during the 2011 campaign, entering this week's contest against Air Force with a 3-0 ATS record.

Navy is 16-1 in its last 17 Service Academy games, with its only loss coming last year against Air Force in Colorado Springs.

Bettors will likely back the Midshipmen this week due to their 11-1 ATS mark in this series.

Temple Owls

6 of 9

The Temple Owls have compiled a 4-0 ATS record this year, including a 38-7 straight-up win over the Maryland Terrapins as eight-point road underdogs last week.

First-year head coach Steve Addazio has watched his team outscore opponents by an average of 25 points in the first four weeks.

Bettors will remain confident in laying eight points at home against Toledo, as the squad is 9-3-1 ATS as a favorite of 3.5 to 10 points.

Stanford Cardinal

7 of 9

The Stanford Cardinal took last week off and will bring in a perfect 3-0 ATS mark into Saturday's contest against the UCLA Bruins.

Quarterback Andrew Luck has led the team to 11 consecutive wins, which is the longest such streak in the nation.

Bettors will expect the money-making run to continue due to the Cardinal covering five of the last six meetings against the Bruins in Palo Alto.

Florida Gators

8 of 9

The Florida Gators are averaging 461.8 yards per game offensively, while also possessing a defense that is in the top five nationally.

Bettors have seen the team post a 3-0-1 ATS record, including a 48-10 win over the Kentucky Wildcats last week as 17.5-point road favorites.

The Gators are a home underdog for the first time this century when playing Alabama Saturday, which will have many relying on the team's 11-1-1 ATS mark when getting points in SEC tilts.

Arkansas State Red Wolves

9 of 9

The Arkansas State Red Wolvers are out of the Sun Belt Conference and have covered all four of their games this season.

It's an amazing feat considering the program has been favored by double digits in two games, and sent out as double-digit underdogs in the other two contests.

They will have another opportunity to keep that streak going, as oddsmakers have made them 13.5-point road favorites against Western Kentucky.
