Arsenal vs. Olympiakos: Young Talent Needs to Continue Stepping Up for Gunners

Matt FaulconerSep 28, 2011

Arsenal is currently involved in a big-time game against Olympiakos in the UEFA Champions League in which they need to pick up three points at home against a Greek team that has historically struggled on the road.

The Gunners lead Olympiakos 2-1 at halftime behind goals from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andre Santos.

The goal from Oxlade-Chamberlain was his first Champions League goal at Emirates Stadium and certainly provides the team a huge boost.

With the Gunners struggling to stay healthy, they desperately need their younger players to step their game up.

That is exactly what is happening today. The 18-year-old Oxlade-Chamberlain provided a huge boost when he scored the team's first goal of the match, which was just eight minutes into the game.

It's not just players like Oxlade-Chamberlain that need to step up. Emmanuel Frimpong and Carl Jenkinson are players that have been called upon to step up this year, and may be called upon more than they should be at their age.

This is exactly what the doctor ordered for Arsenal.

They have a lot of health issues in the midfield and are going to struggle at times because of injuries. Every team in the world is going to suffer through injuries during the course of a season. Having those young players step up is huge for the Gunners.

If these young players can continue to rise to the occasion, the Gunners may find themselves cruising through the group stages of the Champions League.
