College Football Recruiting 2012: 5 Most Explosive One-Two Punches Committed

Edwin WeathersbySep 28, 2011

Explosiveness is one of the very key traits that I look for when evaluating a football prospect, no matter NFL, college or high school. Each position on the field needs to have an explosive technique or trait to their game.

Also, explosion needs to come in a football team's units, defensively and offensively. Your offense needs to be explosive to put points on the board while your defense needs to be explosive to shut down offenses.

In this 2012 recruiting cycle, there are a ton of recruits that are explosive. Yet, look even harder and you see the committed recruits have a chance to form some pretty potent and explosive combinations in college.

5. Zach Kline and Bryce Treggs: California

1 of 5

Kline has a cannon for an arm and Treggs is among the quickest, speediest and agile players in the country. Some even compare Treggs to former Berkley Bear DeSean Jackson.

With Jeff Tedford being an offensive minded coach, you have to imagine that when these two get on the field for Cal, they should form an explosive combination for the Bears.

Kline to Treggs—get ready to hear that TD call a lot if you're in Pac-12 country.

4. Florida State DE Trio

2 of 5

Obviously this group is led by five-star, All-World DE Mario Edwards, who ESPNU lists as the very best player in the country. Edwards is a 6'4", 265-pound monster that could just as easily grow into a DT as he could be a great strong-side end.

Then you add in Chris Casher, who stands 6'4", 240-pounds and is a chiseled specimen, but also has elite instincts and on-field awareness. Casher has renowned play strength, quickness, speed and amazing athleticism.

Dante Fowler is next up, however he has flirted some with Florida. Fowler is a 6'3", 240-pounder with a great skill set to rush the passer and agility to play some short area zone coverage.

3. Connor Brewer, Cayleb Jones and Thomas Johnson: Texas

3 of 5

Keeping with the theme of combinations through the air, Brewer should love coming to Texas.

Aside from Texas being, well, "Texas," there's a good chance whenever he gets the starting nod, he could walk up to the line of scrimmage and on each side of him see Cayleb Jones and Thomas Johnson on his flanks.

Jones reminds me a bit a of Larry Fitzgerald and Johnson is a shifty receiver that should be explosive after the catch.

2. Zeke Pike and Ricardo Louis: Auburn

4 of 5

The Tigers are getting two players that do what their traditional positions require: arm strength and deep speed.

Pike may have the strongest arm in the country, but I'm sure Zach Kline would contest that, and Louis is a big play threat waiting to happen soon as he gets off the bus.

The 6'6", 225-pound Pike has a high ceiling as a passer and even though the 6'2", 200-pound Louis is raw in refinement, many expect him to be one of the best players to come out of this class.

Just two more talented toys for Gus Malzahn to work with.

1. Jameis Winston and Marvin Bracy: Florida State

5 of 5

Winston's the premier QB prospect in the country, but really, when you have the fastest player in the country committed to the same school as the No.1 QB, that's the winner.

Marvin Bracy has a chance to make the Olympic sprinting team one day, but what makes him prime is the fact that his speed does transition onto the football field.

He just blows by defenders as a WR and can be used on screens, go's, smokes, bubbles, reverses and even some wildcat stuff along with being a returner.

Combine that skill set with Winston's dual threat abilities, which include great speed and running ability for a QB, and you see that these two should make an explosive combo in Tallahassee.
