College Football Predictions Week 5: Michigan and 3 Top 25 Teams on the Rise

Mike ChiariSep 27, 2011

While it is certainly possible that a few of the remaining undefeated teams in college football have been the beneficiaries of easy schedules, those teams aren't getting much respect in the polls. Because of this perceived lack of respect, a number of teams are sure to be playing with chips on their shoulders this week.

With so many games that pit Top 25 teams against each other on tap for Week 5, there is plenty of opportunity for advancement. Here are three Top 25 teams in line to shoot up the rankings this week.

Arizona State Sun Devils

The No. 25 Arizona State Sun Devils may not be undefeated, but they are most certainly a team on the rise after dismantling the then-No. 23 USC Trojans 43-22 last weekend. With the struggling 0-3 Oregon State Beavers on the schedule this week, Arizona State figures to move up the rankings a bit.

The Sun Devils have been impressive on both sides of the ball, as quarterback Brock Osweiler has played terrifically, and the defense has been key to a 3-1 start. The Sun Devils have already beaten two ranked teams in USC and the Missouri Tigers, and narrowly lost to another in Illinois, so they should have no issue against the Beavers on Saturday.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Boasting the second best running game and the best scoring offense in the nation, the No. 21 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have blown through their competition en route to a 4-0 start. The Jackets boast an incredible six players with 146 or more rushing yards over the season's first four games, including Orwin Smith and David Sims.

Georgia Tech has also benefited from a vastly-improved passing game, thanks to quarterback Tevin Washington. Prior to last week's seven-point win over North Carolina, the Jackets hadn't faced particularly good competition, so that is a concern, but they should be able to handle a ho-hum N.C. State team this weekend.

Michigan Wolverines

Despite plenty of promise, the Michigan Wolverines were never able to get out of the doldrums with Rich Rodriguez as head coach. In just his first season as Michigan's new head man, though, Brady Hoke has completely turned things around for the No. 19 Wolverines. Quarterback Denard Robinson is still a dual-threat monster, but the biggest difference is an improved defense.

The Wolverines rank 11th in the nation in points allowed with 12.8 per game, and have allowed more than 10 points in just one of their four contests, all of which have been wins. As long as the Michigan defense holds up, they should have little issue remaining undefeated en route to an Oct. 15 showdown with Michigan State.
