Conference Realignment: West Virginia and 3 Schools Most Likely on the Move

Austin FoxJun 7, 2018

Conference realignment talk has taken over college football and honestly, a lot of people just want it to stop...especially the teams who are in jeopardy of being left out of a conference.

A lot of Big East teams are probably worried, as is most of the Big 12.

Here's a look at three teams that will most likely wind up in a different conference.

Kansas

1 of 3

Ever since Kansas' 12-1 magical season of 2007, they have slipped back into mediocrity.

Whether Turner Gill can turn them around or not remains to be seen.

What also remains to be seen is if any conferences would even want them for football.

Basketball, though, is a different story.  Any conference would love to have these guys.  It seems unlikely that they will remain in the Big 12, and their final destination is still currently a mystery.

The Big Ten's name has come up a lot, but would they realistically go there?  Now that Syracuse and Pittsburgh are in the ACC, imagine how strong of a basketball conference they would be if Kansas joined.

There is even some talk that the bottom of the Big 12 could team up with what's left of the Big East to form their own conference.

If that happened, it would probably be a pretty strong basketball conference.

However, football wise, it doesn't look good for Kansas.

Missouri

2 of 3

Missouri is in a similar situation as Kansas.  They seem unlikely to remain in the Big 12, but where would they go?

For a while, the Big Ten looked like they were going to take the Tigers, but that fell through.

Then recently, it looked like Missouri was headed to the SEC, but that doesn't look as likely anymore.

With Texas A&M now on board though, the SEC will likely have to add a 14th team, so why not Missouri?

The Pac-12 also seemed like a likely destination for a while.  Again, the Pac-12 said they're not expanding, so that seems unlikely now.

It shouldn't be as hard for Missouri to find a conference though, as they are a formidable team in both basketball and football.

West Virginia

3 of 3

West Virginia, which has been the class of the Big East over the last few years, seems destined to end up in a better conference.

The SEC has already turned them down, but there are still other conferences that would probably accept them.

They have been linked to the Big Ten, but would the Big Ten really take them?  In terms of geography, it makes sense, but that may be about it.

As mentioned earlier, the leftovers from the Big 12 and Big East could combine to form their own conference, and West Virginia would probably be suited well for that.

What would make the most sense for the Mountaineers though seems to be the ACC.  However, they just added Syracuse and Pittsburgh, putting them at 14 teams, so they could possibly be done expanding.

If they aren't though, they should certainly look to West Virginia.  They would fit in great in the ACC for both football and basketball.
