Georgia Football: Do Bulldogs Still Have a Shot at SEC East?

Gabe ZaldivarSep 26, 2011

The Georgia Bulldogs proved one thing on Saturday: No matter how bad the season gets, it can't be as bad as the misfortune Ole Miss finds themselves in. In fact, the season is far from a failure for the Georgia Bulldogs.

You would think that the 2011 season was a wash for all the heat that I and other have given Georgia head coach, Mark Richt.

In reality, the year can still be salvaged. It will take some good fortune and improved play, but the Bulldogs can still feature in the SEC title game.

Good News Amidst Bad

This season looked to be more of the same for a club that lost to Central Florida in the 2010 Liberty Bowl.

The Bulldogs showed that they were far from an elite program after they fell to top-25 teams Boise State and South Carolina to open up play.

This past Saturday, the Bulldogs got over on Ole Miss in what was titled the Hot Seat Bowl, due to the dismal fortunes of both clubs and their coaches.

The two teams that Georgia will be facing are Florida and South Carolina. The best part is that Florida is yet to hit the most challenging portion of their schedule.

You have to think that two losses loom in the form of LSU, Alabama, South Carolina and Florida State. That is a mine field that the Gators cannot manage unscathed.

The other part that should leave Georgia supporters hopeful is the play of Stephen Garcia. The South Carolina quarterback is turnover prone, and it will come to haunt the Gamecocks toward the end of the season when they play the likes of Arkansas and Clemson.

Georgia has seen the worst of their schedule, and will now enjoy teams they should take care of week after week.

It is very easy to blast a program for being soft when you only take into account a few weeks. Georgia has the perfect chance to prove to the voters that they are wrong about them.

In so doing, they can still win the SEC East, something that seemed improbable only a few days ago.
