College Football Rankings Week 5: Virginia Tech and 4 Teams Still Overrated

Jake MartinJun 7, 2018

With four weeks of college football in the books, contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack, but the AP Top 25 poll still has five ranked teams playing the role of pretender.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Virginia Tech is always being considered a top contender to winning a national championship, but then fall short each year?

Led by head coach Frank Beamer, they play Beamer Ball, which is great special teams, great defense and a great rushing attack.

In my opinion, that’s the best recipe for a national title, but the Hokies fail every year to capture that crystal ball.

So why are they continuously overrated? Along with Virginia Tech, there are also four other teams that are overrated heading into Week 5.

Virginia Tech

1 of 5

All right Virginia Tech, I’m calling you out, but you have the chance to prove me wrong this Saturday when you play a very good Clemson football team.

Like most the teams on this list, the Hokies have yet to face stout competition and have had their fair share of struggles so far this season.

Virginia Tech barely got by East Carolina 17-10 and hasn't looked impressive since they're opening victory against Appalachian State.

Virginia Tech will prove again this week that they are indeed overrated when they fall to Clemson in Lane Stadium.

Texas

2 of 5

They're 3-0, but they haven't played anybody yet, and you can't argue that UCLA is a better team than what they seem to be.

I watched them play against Texas, and they had opportunities to beat them, but failed to make plays. Texas opened the season with a 34-9 win against Rice, defeated BYU 17-16 and dismantled UCLA 49-20.

Case McCoy has shown some promise at the quarterback position, but he's still young and has yet to face a strong defense.

It’ll be interesting to see what the Longhorns do against the Big 12 elite. I'm not saying this team doesn't have talent, but I don't think they're Top-20 caliber just yet.

Michigan

3 of 5

Speaking of teams that don't play anybody, look no further than Michigan. The Wolverines beat Western Michigan 34-10, Eastern Michigan 31-3 and San Diego State 28-7.

Their win over Notre Dame was a fantastic come-from-behind victory, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to be the person Family Guy calls Buzz Killington.

Where were Notre Dame's defensive backs that game? Denard Robinson would launch the football up and the receiver would jump up and grab it, while the cornerbacks looking clueless and out of place.

I'm afraid we'll have to wait until Oct. 15, when they play Michigan State, to see how good this team really is, because they'll get their second test of the season.

TCU

4 of 5

You want to know what's sad? Because of the achievements of this team last year, they're now getting recognition and high rankings after losing to a ranked team and beating up on the little guys.

The Horned Frogs opened up with a loss to Baylor and then followed up with three consecutive victories over Air Force, UL-Monroe, in a bit of a struggle—the Horned Frogs pulled away late—and Portland State.

Another thing that is sad about this team is they won't play a good opponent until Nov.12 when they play Boise State, and that is the only tough game left on their schedule.

Talented or not, you have to test yourself against tough opponents outside of conference play, if your conference is as weak as TCU’s.

Arkansas

5 of 5

Here's confession time. I picked Arkansas to upset Alabama this weekend because I thought they had the recipe to defeat the Crimson Tide.

Other than the Tide's running game, they haven't looked that impressive on offense, and I thought Arkansas' offense was good enough to put points on the board against the best defense in the nation.

Boy, was I wrong. I thought this was going to be the year the Razorbacks get over the hump and declare themselves as a legit contender in the SEC West, but after Saturday's performance, I'm questioning the Arkansas.

Plain and simple, you can't give up a touchdown on a fake play, throw an interception for a touchdown and allow a punt return for a touchdown against one of the best teams in the country.

This team has a long way to go before they pull off winning the SEC West.
