Chelsea FC: A Photographic Look at the Blues' Season so Far
The season is still young, and there's plenty of football yet to be played and numerous events yet to take place, but let's take a look at Chelsea's season so far—in photographs.
And in the spirit of each picture saying a thousand words, I'll try to keep my comments on each slide to a minimum, thereby letting the pictures tell the story themselves.
Note: Sorry if the pictures are a little underwhelming, there's no way to make them bigger like most photo-slideshows usually are, and the size they are now doesn't quite do them justice.
All Eyes on Torres
1 of 13It's the opening day of the season, and all eyes are on Torres as he leads the Blues front line. Although the game ended goalless, El Niño showed his first great game in months.
Shane Long's Goal
2 of 13Just minutes into the first home game of the campaign, West Brom's Shane Long capitalizes on an error from Alex and scores a goal past Henrique Hilario, which strikes fear into AVB, and angers the fans so much they boo the Blues as they walk off at halftime while the score is still 0-1.
First Goal of the Season
3 of 13The score at home is 0-1 against WBA, when Nicolas Anelka fires the ball into the net to score Chelsea's first goal of the season, causing the Blues on the sideline to erupt in cheers.
Didier Drogba's Injury
4 of 13Didier Drogba is knocked unconscious when Norwich goalkeeper John Ruddy makes a rash challenge for the ball midair. He is taken off and rushed to the hospital for tests.
Juan Mata's Debut Goal
5 of 13Juan Mata scores his first goal for Chelsea on his debut at Stamford Bridge against Norwich.
The AVB Crouch
6 of 13AVB is often seen doing his now-trademarked crouch on the touchline.
Daniel Sturridge's Miraculous Backheel Goal
7 of 13Daniel Sturridge scores his first goal in Chelsea blue in over a year—a seemingly impossible backheel past the goalkeeper which then evades a Sunderland defender and finds its way into the bottom right corner.
Torres' First Goal of the Season Against United
9 of 13Fernando Torres scores his first goal of the season—and second goal overall for the Blues—over the shoulder of United goalkeeper David De Gea.
The Miss
10 of 13After a great performance and an even better goal, Torres makes a shameful miss after clearing the ball behind De Gea and the United defenders, only to put it just wide into the side netting.
Lampard on the Bench
11 of 13This is something we haven't seen much of until AVB arrived: Frank Lampard on the bench. AVB proving that no one is bigger than the club as a whole, and that he's not afraid to make bold strategic decisions, regardless of what anyone thinks.
Torres' Red Card
12 of 13After scoring a goal of his own and playing a big part in the one after it, Torres is sent off after an unwise challenge against a Swansea player, condemning him to the bench for three weeks.
Conclusion
13 of 13In the end, the season is still young, and there will be plenty more of these kinds of moments to come. I'm sure we'll all be looking forward to them.
