College Football Rankings: 3 Biggest Pretenders in Top 25
The pretenders in the Top 25 are starting to be weeded out as teams roll into conference play. However, there are still some big impostors waiting to be exposed.
Here are three.
No. 8 Nebraska
Nebraska is full of holes, and they have masked them by playing bad defenses at home. Three of their four games so far have been at home.
The only team they've played this season that has even gotten a vote for Top 25 contention is Washington.
They beat Washington 51-38, thanks in large part to a series of baffling calls on punt plays by the ref midway through the quarter. While Nebraska deserved that win, the game was much closer than the score indicated.
Nebraska's defense is soft, and their offense is not strong enough to carry them.
No. 10 South Carolina
If it is possible to look bad going 4-0, South Carolina has done it.
While they have shown a knack to pull out wins, the fact that they have had to display that knack virtually every game is alarming.
The Gamecocks have yet to put a complete game together. They have had long stretches of defensive ineptness and have made silly mistakes on offense.
This inconsistency is going to kill them in the ultra-competitive SEC.
No. 18 Arkansas
Arkansas looked strong, outscoring their overmatched first two opponents by a combined score of 103-10. Then they began to show their true colors.
They squeezed by Troy 38-28, and then were routed by Alabama 38-14.
Arkansas is led by their passing offense, but this passing offense is not going to cut it against the tough defenses of the SEC.
Furthering Arkansas' problems is the fact that they do not possess one of those tough SEC defenses.
