College Football Rankings: Week 5 Biggest Surprises and Disappointments
Week 4 was incredibly exciting and had four games between Top 25 opponents. Week 5 also has four battles between teams in the Top 25 and looks to be just as exciting.
Clemson pulled the upset against Florida State at home, and Arkansas fell flat in their first game against a quality opponent.
Who will surprise and disappoint next week? Read on to find out.
Georgia
1 of 4Georgia takes on Mississippi State in the Battle of the Bulldogs.
Both of these teams started off the season in underwhelming fashion, but Mississippi State topped it all by needing overtime to beat Louisiana Tech last week.
With this game being played in Athens, expect Georgia to come out on top and get some votes in the Top 25.
Illinois
2 of 4The Illini take on Northwestern this week, and they lost to Army.
But they didn’t have quarterback Dan Persa for that game, and he should make his return this week.
The Wildcats always seem to have an upset in them, and Illinois has done very little to show they are a Top 25 team.
Vegas currently has Illinois as a seven-point favorite, but I would take Northwestern straight in this matchup.
Florida
3 of 4The Gators have climbed from 22nd in the preseason all the way to No. 12 without beating a single ranked opponent.
They take on Alabama this week at home, and while Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey are incredibly fast, Florida will need a lot more to pull off the upset.
That said, it is really hard to find a weakness on this team.
The defense has been nothing short of stellar, and Jeff Demps and Chris Rainey have electrified Charlie Weis’ offense.
This will be Alabama’s second road game this year, and they only scored 27 against Penn State who could barely hold onto the football. The game will be a lot closer than many people expect.
Clemson
4 of 4Clemson beat Auburn and Florida State at home in consecutive weeks and now have to travel to Blacksburg to face Virginia Tech.
The offense has put up amazing numbers, but the defense has been lackluster, specifically against the rush.
The Hokies have one of the best corners in the country in Jayron Hosley to match up with Sammy Watkins, and running back David Wilson is averaging 129 yards per game.
Put all of that together with the Blacksburg crowd and Clemson’s history of losing on the road in big games, and you have a team poised to collapse.
