Mike London Says No Quarterback Controversy for Virginia Football

Dan SchutteSep 26, 2011

After a tough loss at the hands of Southern Mississippi, Head Coach Mike London stood behind sophomore quarterback Michael Rocco.

Rocco threw three interceptions before suffering a rib injury, and was replaced by David Watford. Watford performed well, leading a 76-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, then making a very athletic play for the two point conversion. Watford was also leading a second drive in the game's waning moments, but was plagued by a big drop by a wide receiver.

Here's a look at the numbers: Rocco went 16-of-24 for 140 yards with 3 interceptions. Watford went 10-of-20 for 81 yards with one touchdown.

The numbers are similar, but Coach London says if Rocco's healthy, Rocco will play. "The quarterback is Michael Rocco," said London after the game. "I'll find out what's wrong with him physically, and then after that, we'll talk about if he can perform."

Injuries to the midsection can be tricky. The twisting and throwing motion a quarterback must make time and time again adds special challenges. An injury that a lineman can play through can keep a quarterback out for weeks. The injury to Rocco doesn't appear to be too serious, but time will tell.

While London says Rocco is the guy, don't be surprised if he is on a short leash Saturday against Idaho. Watford was a highly-touted recruit, and his play against Southern Mississippi showed he can lead the team during crunch time.

While Coach London says emphatically there is no quarterback controversy for the Cavaliers, there could be one down the road.
