Texas A&M and SEC Expansion: 5 Great Rivalries We cannot Wait To See

Michael TaglientiJun 7, 2018

When the Aggies move to the Southeastern Conference in 2012 they will create renew some old rivalries and create rivalries with some new teams.

The SEC is the top football conference in the country. Every Saturday is a war as your school goes up against another great team.

There are no weekends off in the SEC as every team has talent.

The SEC is full of teams that the Aggies have a history with. This should help make for great games in 2012 and in the future. Let's take a look at five teams who should have instant rivalries with Texas A&M.

Arkansas

1 of 5

Texas A&M and Arkansas re-started their rivalry three years ago. Arkansas holds in an edge in the all time series 40-24-3.

The Razorbacks have beaten the Aggies the last two years at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington and will try to stretch that streak to three on Saturday.

The Hogs and the Aggies as a rivalry has cooled down since the Southwest Conference broke up. It is more a rivalry now of respect than hate. I imagine once the Aggies actually beat Arkansas in the game that some of the animosity will return.

LSU

2 of 5

The Aggies will renew their series with Louisiana State University in 2012.

The Aggies played the Tigers up until 1995 when Gerry Dinardo decided to drop the series because he claimed he could not rebuild a football program by starting every season 0-1.

LSU leads the series 27-20-3.

In the 1960's and 1970's, the Aggies would play every game at Louisiana State because they received a bigger payday than playing at home.

With Mike Sherman recruiting more and more in Louisiana, this game takes on even greater meaning.

LSU is one of the top programs in the nation right now. This will be a very tough matchup for the Aggies every year.

Mississippi State

3 of 5

Mississippi State is a land grant agricultural college in Mississippi that features the maroon and white color scheme.

Texas A&M is a land grant agricultural college in Texas whose teams wear maroon and white.

Both schools had Jackie Sherrill as their head coach.

Both enjoy beating their in-state rival in a game on Thanksgiving.

Mississippi State and A&M both are rebuilding programs on the rise right now.

Both schools are in the SEC West and should immediately have a rivalry as they try to compete with the upper echelon teams in the conference.

Alabama

4 of 5

Alabama took Bear Bryant away from Texas A&M in the 1950's. A&M took Dennis Franchione away from Alabama in 2002. The shear inequality of that trade should make the Aggies dislike Alabama.

The Aggies are 1-3 all time against Alabama.

Bryant left A&M and created a legacy at Alabama that is unmatched.

Franchione left a program in disarray that Mike Sherman is still trying to fix.

Alabama owes the Aggies for not telling them how bad Franchione was.

The Crimson Tide try to cherry pick the state of Texas in recruiting to wins against them will go a long way towards keeping elite talent in state.

Auburn

5 of 5

Texas A&M and Auburn have a lot in common. Both are land grant institutions.

Both have to deal with in-state rivals who have storied gridiron legacies.

The Aggies call Texas alums "t-sips." Auburn fans call Alabama fans "bammers."

Auburns' head coach Gene Chizik coached the defense for Texas when the Longhorns won the national title in 2005.

The Aggies are 2-0 all time versus Auburn. The Aggies beat Auburn in the 36-16 in the 1986 Cotton Bowl when they stuffed Bo Jackson on the goal line four plays in a row.
