College Football Recruiting 2012: 4 Recruits With Heisman Potential

Edwin WeathersbySep 25, 2011

Winning the Heisman Trophy is one of the most desired individual goals in all of sports. You become part of an elite fraternity for the rest of your life.

Everyone loves to speculate about who will win the Heisman every year. How about we speculate on who could be raising the Heisman Trophy in, say, 2015?

I know, a little premature, but here are four players right now that I think have Heisman potential.

4. Stefon Diggs, WR/RB/RS

1 of 4

With a player like Diggs, his stats may never be dominant in one specific category. That's because he does so much and a little bit of everything.

However, real football observers know those stats add up. Diggs should be able to play WR, but also can be used as a RB. Toss in the fact he's a great return man and you see what I mean.

Another key aspect is the fact I expect Diggs to make some electrifying plays with the ball in his hands...and we all know that highlight plays = increased exposure, which = Heisman talk.

3. Johnathan Gray, RB

2 of 4

A prime reason I have Gray ranked below Keith Marshall on this list is because Gray is headed to Texas where he will split carries with Malcom Brown. That will take votes away from him in the long run.

Plus, the key phrase in this story is "Heisman Potential," in which Gray does possess. In fact, he'd get my vote for high school Heisman as his career numbers are just silly so far.

However, I do recognize that winning the award will be plenty tough for Gray since I expect Brown to compete for the trophy, too.

2. Keith Marshall, RB

3 of 4

Right now, Marshall is still mulling his options. From Georgia, to Notre Dame, to Florida, to Virginia Tech and more, Marshall has his pick of offers.

I think he will fall into the same boat Gray is in should he sign with UGA, as Isaiah Crowell is already the lead Dawg (pun intended) for Mark Richt's rushing attack.

But should Marshall opt to head in another direction, with his 4.3 speed and quickness, he should find himself in the Heisman race as a junior and senior.

1. Jameis Winston, QB

4 of 4

Winston has a great setup to win this thing in a few years if he sticks with football over baseball.

But then you look harder and you see there's even more.

Florida State is going to be an elite and highly-ranked team moving forward, they're going to win some ACC titles, compete for BCS titles, appear in BCS bowls and win a ton of games. Winston's dual-threat skill set should make him the star of the team, and he'll play with great WRs.

Florida State is one of the most well-known and exposed programs in the nation, and he's probably going to be the star QB on some elite teams.

Can you say Heisman?
