College Football Rankings Week 5: 5 Underrated Teams in the Polls
The AP Poll has been released for this week, and as usual, there have been some oversights.
The mainstream media gets overly excited over meaningless early season wins, and forgets about what it takes to be a championship team. The pundits see a big play or a flashy player, and fall in love with a team in September.
The teams that are built to win in October and November will be standing on top at the end of the year.
There are teams that will be conference champions and possible national champions that are not ranked in the top 10 right now.
Lets take a look at five schools that are currently underrated in the football polls.
No. 7 Wisconsin
1 of 5You win championships by running the ball and stopping the run. Wisconsin can do both as well as anyone in the country.
The Badgers are averaging 245.5 yards per game rushing on 5.7 yards per carry. The Wisconsin offense is a ground-gaining machine that rolls over everyone in their path. The amazing thing is that with transfer QB Russell Wilson at the helm, the Badgers may be a better passing team than running.
Russell Wilson is completing over 75 percent of his passes to the tune of 284 yards per game. Wilson is an NFL trigger-man who can run play action all day with the best rushing attack in America.
Wisconsin's defense has allowed a paltry 89.2 yards per game rushing on 2.9 yards per carry.
The Badgers have an elite offense and an elite defense, and can make a legitimate claim that they are the best team in the country.
No. 4 Boise State
2 of 5The team that everyone loves to hate is in the Top 5 again, and in my opinion is underrated at number four.
Boise State would beat Oklahoma on a neutral field. Boise State might beat Oklahoma at Oklahoma.
The Broncos are an extremely physical team this year, and proved their mettle by pushing Georgia around to start the season.
Kellen Moore is arguably the best college quarterback in the nation.
Boise State has one of the best pass defenses in the nation, with seven interceptions in three games.
The seniors on this Boise State squad have only lost two games in their careers. Maybe they will finally be given the respect that they deserve and be given a chance to play for it all.
No. 12 Florida
3 of 5The 4-0 Florida Gators should be ranked in the top 10.
The Gators defense has been exceptional, and Charlie Weis has turned the offense around.
Florida is outscoring its opponents on average 40-9.
The Gators are rushing for 259 yards per game, and are allowing only 56 yards per game.
Weis has turned Justin Brantley into a sold college QB. Brantley is completing 64 percent of his passes for 188 yards per game.
Will Muschamp has the Gators playing championship-level defense.
Florida is playing like a top 10 team on the field this year.
No. 20 TCU
4 of 5TCU is being punished for one bad game. The Horned Frogs are being punished for playing a bad game on defense against Baylor.
TCU is a good program that deserves to get respect from the pollsters.
TCU replaced almost their entire defense after the 2010 season. Gary Patterson is the best defensive coach in the nation, and will continue to mold this defense.
By the end of the year, no one is going to want to play TCU.
On offense, QB Casey Pachall is completing 69 percent of his passes for a little over 200 yards per game with a 10:2 touchdown to interception ratio.
The Frogs are rushing for 218 yards per game.
TCU is a solid program which will win 10 games this year. They will end the season ranked in the top 15.
No. 21 Georgia Tech
5 of 5The Rambling Wreck is a ground-gaining machine. Georgia Tech is outscoring teams by 30 points per game and and 398 yards per game.
Georgia Tech averages 7.2 yards per carry. They set an NCAA record for rushing yards in a game when they gained 600 against Kansas.
The scary thing about Georgia Tech is that they can actually pass this year.
Georgia Tech is averaging 231.8 yards passing per game. The Yellow Jackets are an offensive juggernaut.
They will likely win 10 or 11 games this year. Tech deserves to be ranked in the top 15.
