College Football Rankings: 3 Teams That Don't Deserve Their Ranking
The release of the Week 5 edition of the AP poll does not present any major shakeups.
Oklahoma and LSU did trade spots at the top. However, that is far from relevant this early in the season.
As the season slowly moves into the heart of conference play, everyone is learning more about each of these 25 teams.
Analysts, fans, even other teams, are trying to figure out who is for real. Who is a contender and who is a pretender? And, who will be this year's BCS buster?
Rankings will always inspire debate and conversation. In college football, the real rankings don't even come out until the BCS releases their poll. That does not stop the ensuing rankings' debates.
There will always be surprises. There will always be questionable decisions and positions for certain teams.
Here are three teams that don't deserve their current AP ranking:
Florida State
1 of 3Florida State failed to upset the Oklahoma Sooners in Week 3. In Week 4, the Seminoles were upset themselves by the Clemson Tigers.
The Seminoles are 2-2. Their two wins are against Lousiana Monroe, and Charleston Southern. Their two losses come in the only two tests they have had. How are they still ranked?
In college football it is hard to plummet out of the Top 25. Especially, if you start the year in the top five.
However, Florida State doesn't deserve to be ranked at this point. Based on talent, yes they do. Based on what they have shown on the field in big-game situations, definitely not.
E.J. Manuel looks shaky behind center. The Seminoles do not have the weapons on offense to carry or even compliment him.
Defensively, the Seminoles are underachieving. They are a very talented bunch, but the energy and focus has not been there.
The 'Noles could turn things around. As it stands now, the 'Noles should be on the outside looking in.
Baylor
2 of 3Baylor is exciting. Robert Griffin III is really exciting. However, Baylor is still ranked about four slots too high.
Granted, Baylor did upset TCU. The Horned Frogs were No.14 at the time. After that Baylor beat up on Stephen F. Austin in Week 2 and allowed 31 points to Rice in a Week 3 victory.
Allowing 31 points to Rice should be a major concern. But it really just says what is already known about Baylor. Griffin III is electric, but beyond him this is not a top 25 football team.
Yes, the Bears are a good team. Until their defense proves themselves, though, there should be reservations concerning this team.
It will take a loss for Baylor to plummet. That will come in due time.
Winning is always a good thing. However, wins against cupcakes should not warrant a dramatic climb in the rankings from the beginning of the season.
Oregon
3 of 3The Oregon Ducks lost in their primetime Week 1 matchup against the LSU Tigers. In the following weeks Oregon has used Nevada, Missouri State and Arizona to pad their win column.
Every year there seems to be a team that can do no wrong. Despite their record, or the nature of their wins and losses, they hang around the top 10 because of their supposed potential.
Oregon is that team this season.
The Ducks are not the same team as last season. LSU exploited their new weaknesses, immediately. Other above average teams and defenses will do the same thing.
Oregon should be a ranked team, without question. However, placing them at No.9 with four very capable 4-0 teams waiting behind them is irresponsible.
The Ducks will most likely climb back into the BCS title picture before the season is over. The Pac-12 schedule is relatively easy.
Teams should earn their rankings based on game perfomance. They should not earn their rankings based on how talented they were expected to be.
