College Football Rankings: The SEC Is Light Years Ahead of Other Conferences
If you're out somewhere watching college football and there's a crowd, ask that audience which conference is the best in the NCAA and you will get a majority response of the Southeastern Conference, aka the SEC.
The SEC is the "IT" football conference today. They boast the last five BCS National Champions. They boast two of the top three teams in both the USA Today and Associated Press polls. And a number of first-round draft picks in the NFL come from the SEC.
If those reasons weren't enough to validate the SEC, well, then here are a few more.
They Have an Exclusive Contract with CBS
1 of 5Sure, other conferences have television deals with the big networks like ABC, ESPN, FX, Versus and Fox Sports, but CBS only shows SEC football games. No other schools are going to get their football games, except for Army versus Navy, on CBS.
Other Conferences Are Losing Schools While Every School Wants to Come to the SEC
2 of 5While the Big 12 is folding, the Big East cannot keep their schools and the Pac 12 is saying "thanks but no thanks" to conference expansion, the SEC is saying, "bring on the extra teams."
The SEC is the conference with the best football, so it's a no-brainer that schools want to come to the conference to play.
The Middle-of-the-Pack Schools in the SEC Are Better Than the Best Schools
3 of 5When we say "middle-of-the-pack" schools, we mean those teams that are good, but they always finish between third and fifth in the conference.
Take Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi State and Georgia out of the SEC, and place them in a conference like the ACC or the Big Ten. They would automatically become one of the best teams in that conference.
If one of those teams happened to head out of the SEC they would be playing in their new conference's championship game.
The Winner of the Conference Championship Game Has Won the Last 5 Championships
4 of 5This started with the Florida Gators the year after the University of Texas won in 2005. Since then it's been nothing but SEC teams dominating the National Championship scene.
Even the middle-of-the-pack teams have won the BCS National Championship. Case in point the Auburn Tigers last year. Before their run they were just a 8-4, 7-5 team. Then they recruited well by taking a chance on a former Florida Gator quarterback and won the BCS National Championship.
Those championships should continue this year.
Kids out of High School Want to Go to an SEC School
5 of 5The best recruiting classes for the last five years have come from this conference. That's not a surprise since the top recruits in high school want two things: They want to play on television and they want to win championships.
That's two things that a majority of the 12 teams in the SEC can offer.
Plus playing in-front of crowds of 75,000-plus screaming fans doesn't hurt as well.
And seeing the number of NFL draft picks that have come from these SEC schools is pretty enticing to 17- and 18-year-old kids.
We could go on and on with more reasons why the SEC is light years ahead of the other football conferences, but these five, plus the other reasons mentioned in the intro, are enough for now.
