Georgia Football: Grading the Bulldogs Game vs. Ole Miss

Brian JonesSep 25, 2011

It was a game the Bulldogs needed to win, and they did, as Ole Miss never had a chance.

The Bulldogs offense was sound, and the defense never allowed Ole Miss to ever get anything going.

However, the special teams have some issues that need to get fixed because they can't afford to have breakdowns in special teams as they head into the thick of the SEC schedule.

Here's a position-by-position grade of the Bulldogs in their game against the Rebels.

Quarterback: B+

1 of 8

Aaron Murray was efficient, completing 17 of 26 passes for 268 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a touchdown, so Murray accounted for all the Bulldogs' touchdowns.

But Murray did throw a pick and did get sacked three times. The offense only scored three points in the second half, which is not an incitement on Murray, but he could have played a little better in the second half.

Regardless, Murray had another strong game and seems to be getting better.

Running Backs: A

2 of 8

This was probably the best rushing performance for the Bulldogs this season.

It was really good to see Isaiah Crowell get the ball 30 times, and it was better to see him rush for over 140 yards.

Carlton Thomas and Richard Samuel rushed for a combined 70 yards, so the running game was on point all game long.

Wide Receivers: A-

3 of 8

The A- really goes to the tight ends, as they scored two touchdowns in the win.

Orson Charles led the team with five catches for 59 yards, and Aron White had a 35-yard touchdown reception.

But receiver Malcolm Mitchell had an explosive play, as he caught a 63-yard pass from Murray in the second quarter which set up a Bulldog score.

Moving forward, Charles and Mitchell are going to be relied upon more heavily in order for the offense to be more effective.

Offfensive Line: B+

4 of 8

When it came to run blocking, the offensive line did their job when it came to driving defenders off the ball and maintaining their blocks. Dallas Lee had another strong effort, and Cordy Glenn was also stout.

But the pass protection has to get better. The three sacks on Murray came on blitzes, so it's something that the line can correct. Overall, it was a good effort, and they should build on this.

Defensive Line: A

5 of 8

It's hard to judge the defensive line's performance because they are usually going to put up big numbers. But the D-line was able to move Ole Miss' offensive line constantly, which led to linebackers constantly making plays throughout the game.

DeAngelo Tyson, Garrison Smith and Abry Jones all played well and look more comfortable in the scheme as the season rolls on.

Linebackers: A+

6 of 8

All the linebackers who played on Saturday were all over the field making plays and gave Ole Miss fits. Jarvis Jones and Cornelius Washington each had one sack, while Michael Gilliard and Armalo Herrera had 13 combined tackles.

They are playing well, even with Christian Robinson and Alec Ogletree. Just imagine how good the unit will be when those two return later in the year.

Secondary: A

7 of 8

Ole Miss had trouble throwing the ball because Sanders Commings, Brandon Boykin and Bacarri Rambo were giving the receivers fits.

Rambo had a big game, as he was able to notch two easy picks. Commings was picked on quite a bit, but he answered the call with two pass breakups.

When the defensive line and linebackers play at a high level, the secondary's job becomes a lot easier, and that was the case on Saturday.

Special Teams: D

8 of 8

The only thing that saved the special teams from getting an F is Drew Bulter punting at a high level.

Whenever Blair Walsh misses four field goals, it's never a good day for the special teams.

The kickoff return team missed recovering an onside kick, and the punt team gave up a touchdown late in the second quarter.

The coverage teams have to be better, because they are going to face better teams who will capitalize on special teams mistakes.
