LSU vs. West Virginia: 5 things We Learned about the Tigers

Dan VastaJun 7, 2018

These LSU Tigers look to be the best team in the country as they were cruising by their gauntlet of a schedule, and the SEC meat part of the schedule has not even began yet. Taking care of Oregon and West Virginia was impressive, and the polls should take notice since we just witnessed a 47-21 beatdown in Morgantown.

Is LSU the best team in the nation? Yes, the only team that looks dead even to me would be the Alabama Crimson Tide. However, in their beatdown over West Virginia, there were a handful of things we learned that maybe we did not know already.

No Jordan Jefferson, No Problem

For all those naysayers out there (I will include myself) who said without Jordan Jefferson the Bayou Bengals would struggle mightily, boy were we dead wrong.

There have been many past BCS National champions with just solid decision making signal-callers. Go back to LSU's two rings they have where Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn were not exactly All-American caliber players.

It just goes to show how great a football team you can be when you are physically dominant on both lines of scrimmage. Is there a team out there better on both lines than the Tigers? Sure does not seem like it. This is good 'ole fashion dominating SEC style of football that the fans just love to see.

Three yards and a cloud of dust for LSU is something they thrive on, but the only problem is that their backs are running for five and six yards a pop.

Spencer Ware and Michael Ford might be the duo of backs in the country, and not enough can be said for their offensive line that gets the bets push up front of any team in America.

So for those who said Jarrett Lee had no chance of leading this team to glory, well so far you are the ones that look like a joke.

Les Miles Is as Good as It Gets

I tell you what, the mad hatter is something else to follow every single weekend. Just when you expect the team to run the rock right at you, they throw a play-action bomb and rip apart your secondary for a long touchdown.

Every player just seems jacked to play football for LSU, and it goes without saying that Les Miles has a case to make as the best coach in America.

I mean, yikes, he has now won how many consecutive non-conference games in his tenure? Yes, that is right, make that 25 in a row!

That is a ridiculous amount of games that his Tigers have won during the regular season against elite competition, but what else can we expect from the funny man that repeatedly says "cya" after every television interview?

Tyrann Mathieu May Win the Jim Thorpe Award

This kid is a freak of nature that is as competitive as it gets on and off the field. Kirk Herbstreit has compared him to Ed Reed and for darn good reason.

Despite the sophomore only standing at about 5'9", 180 pounds, he is just quicker and more ferocious than any guy out there. Whether it is on special teams against the run, in pass coverage or even on blitzes, he has a knack for being at the right places at the right times. He is a true leader that the defense just follows in place.

He has tremendous foot speed, and I swear can just fly to the ball. The most instinctive player in the country arguably, he just has a nose for the football at all times. He is just a sophomore like I stated so I wonder how great he can be in the near future in Baton Rouge?

LSU Is Developing and Improving in All Facets

4 of 5

I thought the special teams was going to be a weak link of this team, but man are they impressive. They have seemingly a dozen different options to choose from at the moment with Tyrann Matheiu and Mo Clairborne leading the way at the moment.

It was Mo's 99-yard kick-off return after West Virginia cut the lead to six after trailing by 20 at halftime that made all the difference in the world for LSU.

That really shut the folks up in Morgantown, and I started to wonder if there were any weaknesses to be worried about in the Bayou?

Their secondary still remains among the best in the country despite allowing 463 yards through the air. Now remember, the Mountaineers are one of the best passing attacks in the nation, and they were held to just 70 yards on the ground, but LSU certainly needs to tighten up their coverage a bit.

Tharold Simon along with Eric Reid, Brandon Taylor, Matheiu and Clairborne are simply sensational at the point of attack, but they need to remain patient and disciplined at all times.

They were so amped up tonight with all the jawing back and forth, at some point, I just told the television to shut up and play some pigskin.

The emotions are honestly the biggest concern for me at the moment of LSU. How much longer can they take with this brutal schedule? They host a poor Kentucky team before hosting a tough Gators squad.

Then they go on the road to to Knoxville and Tuscaloosa with a home date with Auburn mixed in between. Closing out the season with Western Kentucky, Ole Miss (road) and Arkansas should not be mission impossible. Tiger bait and SEC has been the chant all night and it just may continue for months.

LSU Might Not Lose This Season

With the way they are playing right now, you really have to look at the schedule and ask yourself who is going to knock off this team?

They are relentless on defense, and they seemingly always have great field position to score for their offense. Their offensive line is the best in the game, and the duo of Spencer Ware and Michael Ford has been untouchable, they simply cannot be tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

They always put the offense in second and third downs and manageable for Jarrett Lee. Lee has an easy job since these two backs just carry this offense.

It cannot be stated enough how damaging their offensive line can be against front sevens. They take on all tacklers and just steamroll them five to six yards back, and the holes they open are so wide that even I could run through them.

The home cooking in Louisiana must be great because every year, the kids just continue to grow and get bigger, stronger and faster. I just don't what the hell it is, but these young fellas come to play hard every single Saturday, and it is starting to get to a point in time where you wonder how bad will you get beaten up?

This LSU team means business, and they are taking no prisoners at the moment. What does that even mean you ask? The dictionary took the words right out of mouth. "If someone takes no prisoners, when they try to achieve something they are very determined and do not care about other people's feelings."

Wow, is this LSU team impressive and to think we still have two months left in the season. Les Miles just needs to continue to get the same amount of effort out of his young men, and he could likely be playing for his second BCS National Championship in his hometown yet again.
