LSU Football: Why SEC Will Have 1, Maybe 2 Teams in BCS Title Game
There were no major upsets today in the landscape of college football and now that the dust has cleared, if you were to ask me who are the best two teams in America, I would not have to think twice about it.
The LSU Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide may very well be on a collision course to the BCS National Championship despite playing each other on November 5th in Tuscaloosa.
Let's be honest, are there are any teams better than LSU or Alabama right now? In my eyes there are only a few teams that are perhaps in the same zip code. That would be Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Boise State.
LSU has had an absolute gauntlet of a schedule and they have really dominated the opposition thus far. Their front four is relentless and it has the looks of a future NFL line, and they also may have the most opportunistic secondary in the nation as well.
Alabama is led by their All-American corp of linebackers and the secondary is right there with LSU as far as being the best in the nation.
The offenses are explosive though they rely on their power-running attacks. Trent Richardson, Eddie Lacy, Michael Ford and Spencer Ware are four ferocious runners, but both teams have depth behind their horses. The receivers for Alabama remains a small question mark though they have not even needed to throw the ball that much with their lights out defense.
So back to the main discussion and argument. Does LSU and Alabama have legitimate beef for getting an opportunity to play each other in the BCS Title?
I mean, I love the Bowl Championship Series and truly believe that the best two teams have always played in the national championship (maybe Auburn had their case in '04).
If Alabama and LSU continue to improve and dazzle us throughout the season and they run the table outside of their game on the fifth of November, do they deserve to play each other again two months later for the BCS National Championship?
A whole lot will have to be determined from Boise State and the current top-ranked team in the nation with the mighty Boomer Sooners still flexing their muscles offensively.
Oklahoma and Boise State do not have brutal schedules so there is a chance that they both may run the table, but they have to if they expect to have any chance of playing for all the marbles.
The last time we ever even pondered the thought of two teams from the same conference competing for the whole ball of wax was back in 2006 when Ohio State and Michigan were both No. 1 and No. 2 when they faced off in their regular season finale in November.
Michigan suffered a tough loss in Columbus, but they didn't make a good argument when they lost to USC in their following game in the Rose Bowl, 32-18. Ohio State also lost to the eventual National Champion Florida Gators in the BCS National Championship in what would be their next game.
Right now at this moment, the two best defensive teams as well as overall rosters happen to be Alabama and LSU (in my eyes). They are both in the same conference as well as the same division, so while making the argument for these teams, is it completely disrespectful to the other teams in the country or is this legitimate beef?
Remember, the loser of the game will not even compete in the SEC Championship, though that does not mean Jack if they are still ranked No. 2 or No. 3.
We are still in September and have over half a season to worry about whether or not the mighty SEC deserves to have two teams in Louisiana for the National Championship (I just salivated at the mouth to think of LSU faithful in Nawlins if that game happens).
So, before everybody gets carried away, let's keep taking these games one at a time but let us not forget that we have had the best two teams in the BCS National Championship for all 13 seasons. If Alabama and LSU happen to be the clear-cut best two teams in the nation at the end of the season, why not let them play it out on the field?
