Oklahoma State vs Texas A&M: Embarrassing Loss to OSU Shows A&M's Not SEC Ready

Matt ShetlerSep 24, 2011

For Mike Sherman and Texas A&M, this one is going to sting for a while.

The mere fact that the No. 8 Aggies blew a 20-3 halftime lead, only to be held to nine points in the second half in a 30-29 loss to the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys, isn't enough.

It's the statement that the embarrassing loss brings with it.

It says that just maybe the Aggies aren't ready to compete in the SEC just yet.

Sherman has done wonders reviving the Aggies program since his arrival, but the result on Saturday simply says that they still have a ways to go.

Losing to a talented team such as the Cowboys is definitely not the end of the world for Texas A&M. As long as they avoid a collapse in the upcoming weeks, they still have a chance to win ten games and play in a major bowl.

But it does say that the Aggies aren't a top-10-worthy team just yet. It also says that they would likely be much worse if they were already a member of the SEC.

While the Big 12 Conference teams can compete with the SEC at the top, the middle of the pack and even bottom of the pack teams aren't close. The SEC is the much stronger conference top to bottom.

Speaking of middle of the pack, that's likely where this Aggies team would slot into today's SEC.

You have to close out games with a three possession lead. Especially if you were playing SEC football.

Depending on the division the Aggies were to play, imagine having to face the likes of Florida, Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina, LSU, Alabama and Arkansas, just to name a few.

I'm not suggesting that the Aggies currently don't play tough competition, but you can clearly see how things can snowball on you in the SEC. Especially after a tough loss like the Aggies experienced on Saturday.

Texas A&M is clearly a program on the rise under Sherman. Yet they aren't there just yet.

It's probably a good thing they aren't in the SEC just yet. What they've shown is that they aren't ready to compete.
