LSU vs. West Virginia: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Mountaineers Must Make
1. Step the Defense Up on Third Down/Watch Ford and Beckham
WVU needs to step up on third down and lock up Michael Ford and Odell Beckham. On LSU’s first scoring drive the Tigers converted on two key long third downs. The Mountaineers cannot afford to let LSU keep using up the clock with long drives.
2. Stop the Stupid Mistakes
The Mountaineers NEED to stop making stupid errors on offense. Their delay of game and false start penalties could come back to haunt them in the second half. They also already have three turnovers in the first half that left the Tigers with great field position.
If the Mountaineers want to come back, they have to hold onto the ball and eliminate their stupid mistakes.
3. Run the Hurry Up
WVU needs to implement more hurry up offense and wear down the LSU defense. Not only will this push the Tigers’ D to their limit, it will get Geno Smith and the rest of the offense into a solid rhythm.
4. Add More Run Game
Through the first half WVU’s run game has been nonexistent. They need to diversify their play call in order to keep the Tigers honest and guessing on defense.
5. Take Chances
The Mountaineers need to role the dice in the second half. They already showed glimpses of this in the first half when they completed a crucial forth down. If they want to win this game they need to open up their play call and keep taking chances down the field.
