Oklahoma State vs. Texas A&M: Whose Quarterback Played Better?
Brandon Weeden and Ryan Tannehill are two of the best signal callers in the Big 12 and in the nation. Combining for over 800 yards Saturday, America witnessed that both quarterbacks can simply play their best when everything is on the line.
Down 20-3 at halftime almost gave me the thought on whether or not Weeden and the Cowboys were going to fall flat on their faces against in the national spotlight.
Being held to 173 total yards of offense in the first half made me scratch my head as to just how explosive this offense was. Weeden, along with Justin Blackmon and Joseph Randle did not seem like their normal selves after dismantling Tulsa the previous week.
The soon to be 28-year-old went bonkers in the second half as he ended up throwing for a career-high 438 yards! He also threw two TDs by completing an absurd 47 out of 60 pass attempts. Weeden let it be known that he has an absolute cannon for an arm and can make every single throw there is in the book.
Today, Weeden put up filthy video game numbers that can go a long way in pursuit of a Big 12 title and a BCS Bowl. Three Pokes caught 10 or more passes (Blackmon, Cooper and Anyiam) and it was all thanks to the signal caller Brandon Weeden. He easily had a better game than his counterpart thanks in large part to avoiding the turnover bug.
The Aggies signal caller was bit hard by that bug today though early on things did not look bleak.
Ryan Tannehill looked like he reached stardom with his team up 20-3 at halftime and it was his 65-yard touchdown run in the opening minute of the game that led to the early blowout.
However, in the final 19 minutes of the game Tannehill ended up throwing three crucial interceptions. I am a fan of Tannehill but he has drawn some way too early talks about becoming a first rounder in next year's NFL Draft, which in my opinion is a bit of a ridiculous statement.
The former wide receiver and current quarterback is among the best in his conference, but I might take Landry Jones, Robert Griffin and Brandon Weeden all over Tannehill at the moment.
Tannehill does have solid speed unlike some signal callers, but his accuracy is certainly an issue as he tends to force the ball into tight coverages a lot late in ball games.
Weeden's career game makes him arguably the player of the weekend in my opinion. He came up big when it matters most and he did not throw a single interception. He came into the game with six already so that was something he needed to improve upon.
Now I always talk about the two most important reasons why I watch sports: expectations and entertainment. The expectations are a bit too high in College Station since many had them calling for a future BCS Bowl and I am not exactly sure why!
The Aggies are a legit-ranked team because of Tannehill and his viable options in the running and passing game. Yet, they choked away a 17-point lead that evaporated right away in the third quarter.
Brandon Weeden is easily the better quarterback in my eyes because of how dominating he was in the second half. Many compared him to Chris Weinke because of the age, but his receivers are exceptionable running routes downfield as Weeden delivers darts to them.
Fifteen passing TDs and over 1,600 passing yards might be deserving of a Heisman invite if OKST can remain unbeaten, and he might just be my current choice for the hottest hand at in the country at quarterback.
