Oklahoma State Cowboys Claim Huge Win over Aggies in College Station

Jacob KeyesSep 24, 2011

Oklahoma State has never won a national championship in football. With a 30-29 win over Texas A&M on Saturday in College Station, the Cowboys took a huge step towards accomplishing that goal.

QB Brandon Weeden and WR Justin Blackmon struggled in the first half and the Cowboys went into halftime down 20-3. However, Weeden would finish 437 yards passing, while Blackmon would end up with 11 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.

Two touchdown passes by Weeden highlighted a 21-point outburst by Oklahoma State to put the Cowboys ahead 24-20. The Cowboys third quarter momentum almost came to a halt when Weeden threw what looked to be a touchdown pass to Blackmon with 3:12 left in the quarter, but Blackmon fumbled the ball on his way to the end zone. Blackmon tried to transfer the ball to one hand and lost control of the ball, which rolled through the back of the end zone for a touchback and a turnover.

The Aggies would not be able to take advantage of their good fortune. Texas A&M QB Ryan Tennehill would give the ball right back to the Cowboys by throwing an interception to Justin Gilbert. The Cowboys would turn the turnover into three points on Quin Sharp's 24-yard field goal.

Texas A&M would make a game of it though. Tannehill would lead the Aggies back to within three points on a touchdown pass from Tannehill to Jeff Fuller from four yards out. The Aggies would get the ball back with one more chance to tie or take the lead, but an interception by James Thomas would seal the Aggies fate.

Saturdays victory may prove to be the biggest win in Oklahoma State history. By beating the No. 8 team in the country, the Cowboys have put themselves in a great position to compete for a Big 12 title and a possible run at a BCS Championship.

For Texas A&M, some would say they got what they deserve. The Aggies will be leaving the Big 12 after this season. Any chance of them leaving the conference with the championship may have been lost today, as the Cowboys made a statement to the Aggies and the rest of the country with their huge win on the road.
