Oklahoma vs Missouri: Is This the End of the Big 12 Rivalry?

Though many people think of Missouri having a rivalry with Kansas (the longest running rivalry in the Big 12) and Nebraska (the second longest), Missouri also shares a good ol' fashioned rivalry with Oklahoma. 

Since 1929, the Tiger-Sooner Peace Pipe is presented every two years to the winner of the Missouri-Oklahoma game, usually played in October. The ceremonial smoking pipe is only awarded during scheduled, regular season games (Oklahoma leads 65-25-5).

Now, the pipe may have been smoked for the last time.

With so many different teams switching conferences, it may be only a matter of time before the Big 12 conference dissolves. Nebraska has already left, and Texas A&M is tying up lose ends for its departure.

According to NewsOK, Oklahoma president David Boren called for conference commissioner Dan Beebe to be removed from the Big 12. "It's going to take major, major reform...We'd like to have an interim commissioner," Boren stated.

Boren went on to say that unless Beebe leaves, Oklahoma (and Oklahoma State) will not stay.

Days later, Beebe announced that he was leaving the conference. Interim commissioner Chuck Neinas will take over the Big 12 on October 3, according to ESPN. 

This news came after Missouri agreed to join the SEC. Now that Beebe is out, Neinas is hopeful that Mizzou will decide to stay.

If Oklahoma and Missouri leave the Big 12, what will be left? Texas is also talking about leaving and Neinas will be left to clean up after Beebe's mess.

Now that the conference has a new leader, Oklahoma and Missouri should stay for awhile, at least until they see what changes Nenias can provide.

After all, the Tiger-Sooner Peace Pipe won't be nearly as impressive if it gets split in half.
