Georgia vs. Ole Miss: 5 Things We Learned About Bulldogs in Victory

Brian JonesSep 24, 2011

The Bulldogs did what they were supposed to do on Saturday—take care of a not so good Ole Miss team and earn their first SEC win of the year.

There were some good things from Georgia's 27-13 victory, and there were some things they have to work on.

But at the end of the day Georgia came away with the win and seem to improve each game that they play.

Here are five things to take from the game against the Rebels.

No Sophomore Slump for Aaron Murray

1 of 5

Usually, quarterbacks who have a successful first year as a starter tend to fall off in their second year.

That is not the case for Murray as he threw for 268 yards, accounting for all three of the Bulldogs touchdowns in the win against the Rebels.

In four games, Murray has thrown for 11 touchdowns and three interceptions; Murray has become the leader on offense and the team will go as far as Murray will take them.

The Running Game Is Set

2 of 5

This is not a surprise to anybody, but it looks like Georgia has their running game in order.

Isaiah Crowell, who rushed for a career-high 147 yards, will be the top back who will get the ball 25-30 times per game.

Richard Samuel and Carlton Thomas make good spell backs because they are both different—Samuel provides power and Thomas provides speed.

The Bulldogs rushed for 207 yards and that is something that has to be consistent in order for the Bulldogs to continue to win.

Opposing Teams Should Not Throw in Bacarri Rambo's Area

3 of 5

Any fan knows how much an impact Bacarri Rambo can make. He has made plays throughout his career, but he proved it again on Saturday with two timely interceptions.

Rambo looks more comfortable in the 3-4 scheme this year and he has a chance to be the conference's best safety when the 2011 season is in the books.

Malcolm Mitchell Is the Team's Top Receiver

4 of 5

Before the season, Tavarres King was looked at as the guy who can take over for A.J. Green. While King has been solid this season, Malcolm Mitchell is emerging as the top receiver.

Mitchell has three catches for 93 yards, including a 69-yard reception that led to a Bulldogs score.

Mitchell has shown the speed that one needs to be a top receiver in the SEC—if he continues to improve his game when it comes to blocking and running routes, he is going to give opposing defensive coordinators fits for a long time.

Special Teams Need Work

5 of 5

The reason the special teams need work is not that Blair Walsh missed three field goals, but that the kickoff and punt return coverage have to improve.

Ole Miss recovered an onside kick in the second quarter because UGA's kickoff return team was not prepared for it.

The Rebels scored their second touchdown later in the second quarter thanks to an 81-yard punt return by Nick Brassell.

As good as Georgia played, the special teams have to get better because, if anything, bad special teams play will cost the Bulldogs ball games if they are not careful.
