Michigan's Denard Robinson or Baylor's Robert Griffin: Who You Got?

Dan VastaSep 24, 2011

Baylor's Robert Griffin III and Michigan's Denard Robinson may be the two most explosive, entertaining players to watch in America. Who would you rather have on your team?

Both are arguably the most valuable/important players for their teams. Baylor might only be a four-win team without Griffin, and the same could be said for Michigan (six, at most).

These programs are led by both of these All-American-caliber signal-callers who have continually led their teams down the field after their defense have let them down.

Both of these players are eerily identical, though Griffin is much bigger. He is a few inches taller and about 30 pounds heavier, so he can take on more punishment.

Plus Griffin did redshirt a season after injuring his knee during his sophomore season, so he has an extra year under his belt. Plus, his Baylor offense under Art Briles is a wide open, spread system that allows him to use all of his viable options.

Robinson on the other hand is in his first season in Brady Hoke's pro system. However, he is being used as a tailback because, quite frankly, he is the most explosive player in the country.

Robinson has received a bit more hype since he plays for the all time leading program in wins, while Baylor has not been much known for football until recently.

As a pure pass give me Griffin all day, since he throws a tighter and better ball overall. He can see over the line of scrimmage with ease, whereas Robinson barely reaches 6'0".

Talent-wise offensively, these two teams are fairly even in my opinion, and through the last three years you could make the argument that Baylor is better (Michigan has one more win over the last two years).

Griffin made his early Heisman campaign against TCU in the opener, torching the Horned Frogs for 359 and five TDs, whereas Robinson had a few of his own heroics.

In their come-from-behind victory against Notre Dame, he had 446 total yards of offense, along with five total TDs. He had three interceptions against the Irish however, and two today (six for the season). That is why I would give the slightest edge to RGIII.

Running the rock is NOT a big mismatch. This is coming from a huge Denard Robinson fan who has been amazed by his abilities, but Robert Griffin is arguably just as explosive. Maybe he is not nearly as fast, and though he does not touch Robinson in rushing touchdowns, I question the Wolverine's ability to stay healthy.

Robinson plays in a meat grinder of a schedule in the Big Ten where most opponents will load up the box and tee off on Robinson. That might be what makes him more difficult to defend, but I do not love the idea of my star player getting taken to the woodshed every time he takes the rock out of the shotgun.

Robert Griffin is a hog; he is no small kid. He can take a beating, get back up, and tell you about it. He has already played three season since he redshirted his sophomore year, so he gets the advantage in experience. He may not be on national television every weekend like Robinson and Michigan, but threading the needle is a strength of the Baylor Bear.

Robinson still needs to improve his decision-making and must prove to the naysers (including myself) that he can consistently avoid costly turnovers and interceptions. Robinson has 21 picks in his career, compared to Griffin's 11 only. This is a great debate like who is a better college player: Andrew Luck or Kellen Moore?

At 6'2" and 220 pounds, Griffin's tall stature is the knockout argument however. Robert Griffin is the better choice because he can do it all: run, pass, catch...you name it, he does it. Griffin is a bit more polished and is my choice at the moment, though I may change my mind if Denard Robinson continues to develop improved passing mechanics/skills.
