LSU Football: 3 Reasons Why LSU, SEC Should Be No. 1 over Oklahoma, Big 12

James BrownJun 7, 2018

The top of the college football rankings is littered with talented teams like Oklahoma and LSU.

However, the order those two teams fall in the rankings can be disputed. In fact, it’s easy to see that the voters got it wrong and that it’s LSU that should hold the top spot.

The rankings in college football have always come under intense scrutiny, but this time it is deserving.

Look at the Rankings

1 of 5

The latest rankings have Oklahoma the undisputed No. 1 team in the nation.

LSU is listed as the second best team in the country in the AP poll and they sit at No. 3 in the USA Today poll. The voters must be delusional, as there is no reason that LSU should not hold the top spot in the country.

Here are three reasons that LSU should be No. 1 over Oklahoma.

Alabama Hurts

2 of 5

The Tigers are hurt by the fact that they play in the same conference as Alabama. Alabama is also one of the top teams in the country and since they play in the SEC with LSU, when voters cast their ballot, they tend to split the vote between the two teams.

Since Oklahoma literally has little challenge in the Big 12, it’s easier to give them all the votes. This leads to my next reason the Tigers should have the top spot: The conference.

Better Conference

3 of 5

The SEC is the best conference in college football.

This can try to be argued, but the current state of college football proves my point. Teams are jumping ship out of the Big 12 as it begins to crumble. In fact, the most desirable destination for teams in the Big 12 (and all over the country for that matter) is the SEC.

Texas A&M left the Big 12 for the SEC and Oklahoma is next to jump ship as it is reported they are looking to go to the Pac-12. From top to bottom, LSU plays in a tougher conference and that is enough reason to make them No. 1 in the country.

Tougher Schedule

4 of 5

Les Miles takes on all comers in college football. The Tigers boast one of the toughest schedules in the game today.

Oklahoma did take on and beat the Florida State Seminoles—ranked No. 5 at the time—on the road last weekend, but the Tigers had already played two ranked opponents on the road by the time that game kicked off. In fact, after today’s game with West Virginia, LSU would have played three ranked opponents all on the road in the first four weeks of the season.

This is just another reason LSU is the best team in the country.

No Contest

5 of 5

The pollsters have it wrong.

Don’t waste your breath.

The Sooners are a very talented team and deserve to be mentioned in the top three spots in the college football rankings, just not in the No. 1 spot.

That spot belongs to LSU, and it is well deserved.
