College Football: Will Mike Sherman Ever Win Texas A&M a Big 12 or SEC Title
Mike Sherman is a good football coach—there is no doubt about it.
The former Green Bay Packers and current Texas A&M head coach has been successful at every level he has coached at.
Sherman led the Packers to five consecutive winning seasons from 2000-04, including three division titles in that span. He has posted a 21-19 record at Texas A&M heading into the Aggies matchup against Oklahoma State today, including an 11-4 mark in his past 15 games.
Sherman's resume certainly matches what Texas A&M wants in a head coach. But will he be the guy to lead the Aggies to a Big 12 or SEC conference title?
As much as Texas A&M fans don't like to hear this, the answer to the question is most likely: no, he won't. But the problem isn't Sherman's coaching. He is more than qualified and is certainly the right man for this job—no questions asked.
The problem is that Sherman's Texas A&M team will be leaving an already difficult Big 12 conference to move to an even more challenging SEC conference.
Texas A&M has made it clear that they are fed up with the Big 12 and its bias to Texas, which could lead to the team's move to the SEC as soon as next year. So, in other words, they will go from facing the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas every year, to facing the likes of Alabama, LSU and Florida.
With that said, this year could be Sherman's last chance to lead Texas A&M to a Big 12 title, but Oklahoma is the top team in the country right now, and nothing appears to slow them down going forward.
It will only get more challenging as the program moves over to the SEC, which is hands-down the deepest and most talented conference in college football.
Sherman is the coach and should remain for this coach for this Texas A&M program going forward. Playing against the top teams in the country on a yearly basis just isn't the ideal formula for success.
