Oregon Ducks, Alabama Crimson Tide, USC Trojans and LSU Tigers on Upset Alert
Week 4 of the college football season starts today. We've already seen a number of upsets this season, and we're in line to see more today.
With the No. 7 Oklahoma State Cowboys visiting the No. 8 Texas A&M Aggies, we already know the Top 10 is going to look at least a little different next week. It remains to be seen which teams take critical steps to move into the prestigious Top 10.
Don't forget, it's early in the football season so we haven't yet exposed all of the pretenders. This week will go a long way in seeing which teams are real and which are fake.
So, get comfy in your favorite chair, turn that television on and make sure to watch these five potential upsets.
Oregon Ducks
1 of 5The last time the Oregon Ducks played the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, Arizona, the Wildcats fans were lined around the field getting ready to celebrate an upset victory.
Jeremiah Masoli had other plans, as the Ducks created a double overtime thriller in their comeback victory.
While Oregon is heavily favored to beat the Wildcats, don't expect a cake walk. The Ducks have given up large chunks of rushing yards to bad teams the past two weeks. Arizona is known more for their passing game and the arm of Nick Foles. But, a mediocre Pac-12 rushing attack could be just the thing that breaks Oregon's back in this game.
Careful, Ducks. Careful. Did I mention that Cliff Harris must start for the Ducks to get a victory?
Florida State Seminoles
2 of 5The No. 11 Florida State Seminoles travel north to play the No. 21 Clemson Tigers in a game that wouldn't really be much of an upset if Clemson won.
Florida State has dropped their last four games at Clemson's "Death Valley" and they may be without their starting quarterback E.J. Manuel.
Clemson is coming off a thumping of the defending national champion Auburn Tigers last week. I would be picking a definite upset here, but we still don't know how good Clemson is.
Auburn is definitely down this season, so we'll have to wait and see if the Clemson Tigers are the real deal.
I think a mediocre Clemson Tigers team beats an overrated Florida State Seminoles team. Prove me wrong, Seminoles.
Alabama Crimson Tide
3 of 5Bryant-Denny Stadium will be rocking in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for this showdown between the No. 14 Arkansas Razorbacks and the No. 3 Alabama Crimson Tide.
Alabama comes in with the only quality win between the two schools, having knocked off the Penn State Nittany Lions two weeks ago.
Unfortunately for the Crimson Tide, the Nittany Lions are not going to provide the challenge that Arkansas will bring.
Arkansas is coming off an embarrassing 38-28 win over the 0-2 Troy Trojans last week—a team the unranked Clemson Tigers handled in a blowout.
The Razorbacks have something to prove and the Crimson Tide are comfortable. This is a recipe for disaster for Alabama.
USC Trojans
4 of 5The No. 23 USC Trojans are hitting the road for their first game outside the Coliseum this season.
Remember watching the Arizona State Sun Devils beat the Missouri Tigers in dramatic, overtime fashion just two weeks ago? Then do you remember last week when the Sun Devils went on the road and gave up all the ground they had gained in the polls by losing to the Illinois Fighting Illini?
That same Sun Devils team that threw for nearly 400 yards against the Tigers are back now with some frustration they picked up in Illinois. Not only that, but they have the Trojans coming to town—a team every fan loves to watch their team beat.
We will see more of the Brock Osweiler to Aaron Pflugrad connection made famous in the Missouri game, and the Sun Devils will cruise.
LSU Tigers
5 of 5The No. 2 LSU Tigers should control the No. 16 West Virginia Mountaineers fairly easily, right?
That seems to be the perception around the college football world, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Sure, the Tigers are the more tested team. They have faced Oregon and Mississippi State (at Mississippi State). The Mountaineers are simply untested. It's early in the season and we don't yet know how good they are going to be.
The media would be shocked if West Virginia pulled out the upset over LSU, but I wouldn't be.
The Mountaineers come into this game with one of the nation's most prolific offenses. People will say that LSU already shut down a flashy offense in Week 1 by defeating Oregon. Oregon handed LSU 21 points on turnovers, otherwise we might be talking about the one-loss LSU Tigers right now.
LSU needs to watch out. For all the Tigers fans thinking they already proved something against supposedly gaudy offenses, think again. Oregon's offense would beat LSU's defense at least 50 percent of the time. West Virginia just might be able to prove what Oregon was unable to because of their costly, unforced turnovers.
Keep up that swagger LSU, and you're bound to trip and fall.
