Oklahoma Football: Why the Sooners Will Lose Top Spot After Saturday's Game
The Oklahoma Sooners were given the top ranking in the nation in the preseason polls.
After their first two games the Sooners sit at 2-0, with a convincing victory over No. 5 Florida State a week ago.
There is no question that Oklahoma is one of the top teams in the nation.
This weekend the Sooners are on upset alert against the Missouri Tigers. The Tigers are currently sitting at 2-1 after a disheartening 37-30 overtime loss in Week 2 against Arizona State.
The Tigers boast one of the best rushing attacks in the nation, averaging a surprising 257 yards per game.
Most of those yards have come at the hands of sophomore playmaker Henry Josey. Josey has 29 carries on the season for 400 yards and three touchdowns. He has been questionably the most dangerous player in the nation so far this season.
Oklahoma fans would like to forget what happened when the Sooners traveled to Missouri last season.
Last year, Oklahoma suffered their first of two losses on the season, by a final score of 36-27, at the hands of Blane Gabbert and the Tigers.
Gabbert may be gone, but the Tigers still pose a threat this year to an Oklahoma team with BCS Championship dreams.
With that said, the Sooners should walk away with a victory Saturday night, keeping their 37-game home winning streak alive.
This Oklahoma team is much better than the one that walked into Missouri last year.
Landry Jones is one of the top quarterbacks in the nation, the team has three very capable running backs and the defense is one of the most feared in the country.
The Sooners won't drop from No. 1 in the rankings because of a loss, but they will still fall from the spot.
The LSU Tigers are currently sitting at No. 2 in the rankings. After a win this weekend, they will have a 4-0 record with three wins against ranked opponents.
The Tigers have taken down Oregon (ranked No. 3 at the time) and Mississippi State (ranked No. 25 at the time.)
This week they should be able to beat No. 16-ranked West Virginia.
The win should catapult them to the top spot in the BCS rankings.
Not that Oklahoma fans should take too much from it. There is controversy every year surrounding the ranking system.
Oklahoma faces most of their ranked opponents toward the end of the season. All the team needs to do is keep winning and they will be in the top two at the end of the year.
Forget the rankings for now. They really don't mean anything until the end of the season gets closer and teams start to get knocked off.
Oklahoma is one of the top teams in the nation, that's really all that matters right now.
