A little less than a year ago, when this fixture was ready to be played last season, Wayne Rooney had just performed a dramatic U-turn and signed a new contract with Manchester United after initially asking to leave the club. It was Javier Hernandez who was the match-winner on that day, with a brace in a 2-1 United win, including a clever back-header (pictured).

Gary Neville was extremely fortunate to remain on the pitch when referee Andre Marriner chose not to show him a second yellow card after a cynical foul on Matthew Etherington. Stoke equalised through Sanli Tuncay just nine minutes from time, only for Hernandez to net his second less than five minutes later and clinch victory for the away side.

Both teams are now somewhat dissimilar to the starting lineups fielded on that day. Manchester United have seen three of that starting 11 retire, while Stoke have added almost half a dozen potential first-team players to their ranks over the summer.
