Conference Realignment: Why SEC Shouldn't Be Stressed over Finding 14th Member

Eric BowmanSep 23, 2011

As conference realignment continues to confuse college football fans on the daily, the Southeastern Conference can sit back knowing that they're fine no matter what happens.

There is no need to stress because the SEC isn't going anywhere, and finding a 14th member won't be all that difficult once the dust settles.

Sure, the SEC could vigorously pursue a team to be No. 14, but that's the thing, they just don't need to.

Conference realignment began a year ago when Nebraska and Colorado left the Big 12 to join the Big Ten and the newly formed Pac-12.

All of it continued because the Big 12 failed to replace those two teams, and once the money issues continued to occur some teams wanted out.

The first team to officially say they're done with all the mess from the Big 12 was Texas A&M. Their only desire was to join the SEC, despite the fact they know they have struggled against the conference's top teams.

In fact, in their last four SEC matchups, the Aggies have been crushed by a score of 156-80.

Nevertheless, they're set to join the SEC, and it may be by next week if the Aggies can get Baylor and any other Big 12 school to drop their threat of a lawsuit against the SEC.

Dropping the threat is the right move for those remaining Big 12 teams because the sooner they let the Aggies go, then they'll have more time to find a replacement.

The SEC flirted with the idea of 16 teams, but they knew they never really had to go that far. They're strong enough as it is, and when the right team comes along to be No. 14 then it will all work out.

It's obvious that the SEC is first waiting for Texas A&M to officially join the conference before they fully focus all on finding No. 14.

Thanks to the SEC just wanting to add one team and all the hype and talk about a super conference, it forced the ACC, always regarded as in the SEC's shadow, to add two more teams in Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

Now there's a chance the ACC adds two other Big East schools to make them a "super conference" if you will, and all because they were afraid of what the SEC would do.

The ACC's move is a decent football addition, but a much better basketball move. However, the SEC doesn't care about that because they're fine with an OK basketball group when they have such a powerful football program.

When eight teams from your conference begin the year in the Top 25 Polls you know you're doing something right.

So the SEC will relax for the time being and wait for Texas A&M to finally join their conference. There will continue to be rumors about which team will be No. 14, but don't expect the SEC to bring one until for a couple of weeks or even months.
