Boise State Broncos in the BCS Championship: 5 Reasons the Game Would Benefit

Martin SondermannSep 22, 2011

I don't know if there is a more polarizing team in College Football right now than the Boise State Broncos. It seems that people either love them or despise them.  Whatever the case, I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing.  Every story needs a hero and a villain, and depending on your point of view, Boise might be one or the other.

Now, whether you are a die hard fan or hard core hater, what you might not understand is that if Boise State were to somehow make it to the BCS National Championship Game it would be very good for the sport of College Football.  It would not only benefit their many fans, but it would be good for their detractors as well, even if they won't admit it.

I have come up with five good reasons why Boise State playing for the BCS National Championship would be a good thing for College Football and its fans.

No. 5: It Will Create Controversy and Drama

1 of 5

There is nothing better than blogs and bloggers going crazy, talking heads turning red, and water cooler philosophers waxing not so eloquently about why or why not BSU deserves a shot. It is the kind of thing that has made college football the wonderful obsession it is today.

No. 4: Boise State Could Prove It or Shut Up!

2 of 5

If Boise State and their fans think they are capable of winning it all, let them prove it. If they win, it will probably only cause more controversy, which is good for the game. However, if they lose, all the nay sayers could tell them to go away and play in the Mountain West sandbox once an for all.

No. 3: It Might Help Quench the Super Conference Trend

3 of 5

If there are a handful of super conferences, it will only be a matter of time before they band together to shut out anyone else. If you think the system stinks now, what would it look like with with four huge 16 team conferences who control 80 percent of the revenue and television rights?

If Boise State were to play for it all, and win it...it might go a long way to shut down the current trend, and give the fans what they deserve, a national playoff system incorporating the current bowl system.

No. 2: It Would Humble and Frustrate a Lot of People

4 of 5

There are a lot of people out there who have shown their pride and prejudice over the last few years, and I am not naming names. But, they have been knocking Boise State because of its blue turf, small stadium, so called trick play gimmicks, weak schedule, unfair blue uniforms, lucky wins, and even geographic location.

You can hear, watch, and read their resentment every week. It would be nice to see Boise State dish up a little humble pie for those with mouths big enough to eat it.

No. 1: It Would Encourage and Inspire a Lot of People

5 of 5

Like them or not, Boise State has inspired so many people over the last few years. I have read numerous articles that quote various small school and even mid major Athletic Directors, coaches, and students, who all want to be the next "Boise State."

If that same Boise State were to play for it all, who knows the number of people it might inspire?

Imagine a team full of young men who have been told many times that they aren't big enough, they aren't fast enough, and they just don't have what it takes to play division one football, playing for it all. Imagine the next generation of underdogs it might inspire.

Remember when you were inspired as a young person? Remember when things other than super conferences, television contracts, and the almighty dollar drove your passions? Well, Boise State in the BCS Championship Game might remind us all why we came to love this game.
