College Football Rankings: 2 Big Ten Teams Grossly Overrated
Most of the college football world considers the Big Ten to be the most overrated conference in football year in and year out.
It has its own TV channel, it gets a ton of prominent bowl games, and Ohio State occasionally makes the national championship game only to have its brains bashed in by an SEC school.
They’re at it once again with two teams that the AP poll has misjudged.
No. 9 Nebraska Cornhuskers
They haven’t played a single decent team thus far (Chattanooga, Fresno State and Washington) and still are giving up more than 24 points a game.
Clearly the defense isn’t close to what it’s been in previous years and the offense lacks the firepower to make up for it.
Sophomore QB Taylor Martinez is still learning the game and has yet to play extremely well against top competition.
After one more cupcake in Wyoming, the Cornhuskers open up their first season of conference play.
Expect them to fit right in as another big, strong and slow Big Ten team that ends up with three to four losses.
They have to travel to a Wisconsin team that will run the ball down their throats. They have to play Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan as well.
Enjoy the No. 9 ranking while it lasts.
No. 24 Illinois Fighting Illini
Illinois destroyed two cupcakes in Arkansas State and South Dakota State before sneaking by Arizona State in a game that could have gone either way.
The Fighting Illini have a below-average pass offense that doesn’t strike fear in anybody. They currently are ranked 89th in the nation in passing yardage at 187 a game. They lost Corey Liuget and Martez Wilson to the NFL on the defensive side of the ball and have some major issues at safety.
The schedule has to be one of the easiest in the nation with their next ranked opponent not coming until the middle of November.
Be prepared for the Fighting Illini to creep up the rankings slowly but surely over the next month or two before getting blasted by Penn State, Michigan and Wisconsin in three consecutive weeks.
Three games don't change the fact that Ron Zook is a horrible coach.
