2011 Maryland Football Uniforms: Terrapins Must Make Up Their Minds on Uniforms
In their first two weeks of action, Maryland has certainly earned plenty of attention for their uniforms. When they take the field against Temple on Saturday, Maryland will be three for three.
Coach Randy Edsall announced via Twitter that his team will have a new look for the third week in a row.
""The captains decided we'll be wearing gold jerseys, black pants, and black helmets Saturday against Temple."
"
If you're not paying attention, it's hard to know which team is Maryland.
In all honestly, these teams that use different uniform combinations for every game are just confusing everyone.
Look at all of the traditionally great programs. They don't deviate very much. For the most part, those teams look the exact same way know that they did back in the 1960's.
I understand that those schools all have a football identity that's lasted for generations. Even schools like Oregon don't have that.
Sure, the last 20 years has been kind to the Ducks, but their identity isn't as a football school. If it is, it's very recent. And a part of their identity is all of the different uniform combinations.
Maryland is a basketball school. It will take several years of great football to change that. So, a way to establish themselves is to have different uniforms.
Even if Maryland loses and people hate the uniforms, people are talking about them and writing about them.
Now, I am not saying that this is a distraction. It would be ridiculous to suggest that if Maryland would only pick a uniform combination that they will become this century's version of Alabama or USC.
Still, this is just overkill. Is there something wrong with trying to establish a tradition that doesn’t relate to your uniforms?
At the very least, these things don’t need to be changed every week. Give your fans a chance to catch up and allow them to wear the right colors to the stadium every week.
Even as Oregon had a great run last year, their uniforms took attention away from the players on occasion. In the event that Maryland actually turns its program around and becomes a consistently strong football school, they are headed to a similar fate.
