ACC Expansion: Power Ranking The New ACC Coaches With Big East Additions

Randy ChambersSep 24, 2011

The ACC is currently going through a face list by adding more teams. With the recent additions of Syracuse and Pittsburgh, the conference now has 14 teams.

While the ACC has never been looked at as a football conference, they do in fact have some powerful football programs. They also have some solid and underrated head coaches that roam the sidelines on Saturdays.

Here are how the head coaches rank in the ACC with the addition of the two former Big East schools.

Bleacher Report is your home for college football for the 2011 season. From scores, news, analysis, live blogs and updates on your favorite teams and the big national games every week, keep it on Bleacher Report for the very latest in college football news.

Virginia Coach Mike London

1 of 14

Mike London took over in 2010 replacing Al Groh and didn't have the best season his first year, finishing 4-8. But hey, it is Virginia.

London is a defense coach at heart and was the defensive line coach for several teams including the Houston Texans in 2005. He is most known for leading Richmond to a Division 1 championship back in 2008.

He is pulling in some strong recruiting classes and maybe in a few years the Cavaliers will be able to compete.

His head coaching record at Virginia is 6-9 and overall is currently 30-14.

Boston College Coach Frank Spaziani

2 of 14

Frank Spaziani has been on Boston College's coaching staff for the last 12 years and since 2009 he has been the head coach.

Spaziani got his start at Penn State in 1969 as a graduate assistant. He then went on to be a defensive coach for teams like Navy, Virginia, Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Calgary Stampeders.

His first game as a head coach for Boston College he led the Eagles to a bowl victory over Navy. But since then it's been all down hill as the Eagles have lost their last two bowl games and this year are off to an 0-3 start.

If things don't turn around soon, Spaziani may be looking for a job elsewhere.

Syracuse Coach Doug Marrone

3 of 14

Syracuse isn't really a football program, so what Marrone has done in the three years at the program is pretty good. His first season wasn't good at 4-8, but last season leading the Orange to a 8-5 record and a bowl win for what he had to work with is impressive. It was Syracuse first bowl victory since 2001.

Marrone was the offensive line coach for Northeastern, Georgia Tech, and worked in the NFL with the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints.

Entering his third year as the head coach for Syracuse, his team is 2-1 and is showing promise as the weeks go along.

Hopefully with the move to the ACC, Syracuse can grow as a football program and continue to get better.

Pittsburgh Coach Todd Graham

4 of 14

Todd Graham was really first noticed for the job he did at Tulsa as a defensive coordinator after he helped lead them to two bowl games in three seasons. He also helped put together one of the best defensive units in the Conference USA before becoming head coach and eventually leaving for Pittsburgh.

This is his first season as the Panthers coach and he is off to a good start as they are 2-1 and have a explosive offense that averages 32 points per game.

Graham is 45-24 as a coach overall and that includes the job he did at Rice and Tulsa.

Todd Graham has a lot of potential, and with this move to the ACC it will only benefit him and the Pittsburgh program.

Duke Coach David Cutcliffe

5 of 14

David Cutcliffe is best known for coaching Peyton Manning at Tennessee and his brother Eli Manning at Ole Miss. Not bad to have that on your resume, huh?

Cutcliffe is a solid head coach who got his start in 1982 as a assistant at Tennessee. He was then a quarterback coach or offensive coordinator for Tennessee and Notre Dame before becoming head coach of Ole Miss and eventually Duke.

He was offered the head coaching job at Tennessee once Lane Kiffin left, but after heavy thinking he turned it down.

His record at Duke is 13-26 and his overall coaching record is 57-55.

North Carolina Coach Everett Withers

6 of 14

With the scandal that went down in North Carolina, head coach Butch Davis was fired and Everett Withers took over.

Withers was the defensive coordinator before the switch and has coached defense at other programs including Louisville and Minnesota. He was also a assistant coach for the Tennessee Titans for five years.

He is off to a great 3-0 start this season and if he keeps it up, that interim position may become permanent.

North Carolina State Coach Tom O'Brien

7 of 14

Tom O'Brien has been the coach for North Carolina State for the last five seasons and, like many of the coaches on this list, he's done a sub-par job.

O'Brien was the head coach for Boston College for 10 years and won six bowl games in that time frame. He hasn't had nearly the same success at North Carolina State with a record of 27-26 and only wining one bowl game in the first four seasons.

His career record as a head coach is very solid with a 102-71 record, but with North Carolina State it hasn't been good at all.

If O'Brien doesn't step it up and lead the Wolfpack to a bowl victory soon, his career may be over with this program.

Maryland Coach Randy Edsall

8 of 14

Randy Edsall is a solid head coach that ditched his position at UConn after leading them to the Fiesta Bowl. Although the Huskies lost to the Sooners, it was a huge accomplishment and he left with the most wins in history of the program.

Edsall got his start holding several different positions at the University of Syracuse and then moved on to Boston College, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Georgia Tech. Connecticut gave him his first head coaching job and he lead them to their first winning season ever in 2003 and finished with a 70-63 record.

Edsall is doing a great job with this Maryland team, and by the looks of it he will have this program turned into a winner. Soon, Maryland will be looked at as a football school as well as basketball school.

His overall coaching record is 71-64.

Miami Coach Al Golden

9 of 14

Al Golden is in his first season at Miami and it may be his last with everything going on down there.

He spent five seasons at Temple and led them to a bowl game in 2009, which was their first since 1979. He got his first coaching gig at Red Bank Catholic high school in New Jersey. He then went on to coach defense at Virgina, Boston College, and Penn State. At Virginia he turned a defense that was ranked 108th in the country to 18th in just three years.

Although Al Golden has a career record of 28-35, he is still one of the hottest up and coming coaches.

Hopefully he stays with Miami and doesn't bolt once the NCAA hands down a punishment.

Clemson Coach Dabo Swinney

10 of 14

Swinney has done a decent job in his four seasons at Clemson, making three consecutive bowl games. I'm sure the fans would like to see more bowl victories, but considering the Tigers have missed the bowl season all together some years, they'll take it.

Swinney got his start as a graduate assistant at Alabama and then moved up to a wide receivers and tight end coach. In 2003 he came over to Clemson and in 2008 he became the head coach.

He has received some heat with a few sub-par seasons, but he is a fantastic recruiter and the start to this season may be a sign of great things to come for Clemson.

Florida State Coach Jimbo Fisher

11 of 14

Jimbo Fisher finally got his head coaching start in 2010 after Bobby Bowden finally stepped down. Before, Fisher was the offensive coordinator and labeled the "coach in waiting."

Fisher is an offensive coach and got his start as offensive coordinator for Samford in 1991. He then became quarterback coach for teams such as Auburn, Cincinnati, LSU, and, of course, Florida State.

It's hard to fill the shoes of a legend like Bobby Bowden, but a 10-4 record his first season and a Top 5 ranking this year isn't a bad start. Many critics believe Florida State is back on top of the college football world and it all starts with Fisher as the head coach.

Wake Forest Jim Grobe

12 of 14

Jim Grobe has been in the ACC longer than most of the current ACC coaches. He is in his 11th year at Wake Forest and hasn't been too shabby, winning three of four bowl games in that time span.

He's been coaching since 1975 when he became a graduate assistant at Virgina. He then became a linebacker coach at Emory and Henry, Marshall and Air Force before becoming a head coach at Ohio and now Wake Forest.

Wake Forest has gone through its fair share of growing pains, but for what Grobe has to work with, he does a good job and was the coach of the year in 2006, which earned him a contract through 2016.

Georgia Tech Coach Paul Johnson

13 of 14

Paul Johnson is one of the most successful coaches in the ACC right now. After several people questioning his option attack, Johnson has led the Yellow Jackets to three straight bowl games including a BCS bowl game in 2009.

Johnson got his start at Lees-McRae College where he was the offensive coordinator. He then became an offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern, Hawaii and Navy before becoming a head coach at Georgia Southern, Navy and now Georgia Tech.

He now runs one of the most successful offenses in the league, and with a 3-0 start, the Yellow Jackets are contenders for the ACC title.

He has a 29-14 record at Georgia Tech and a 74-43 record overall.

Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer

14 of 14

Is there any doubt that Frank Beamer is the best coach in the ACC? He's been at Virginia Tech since 1987 for a reason. He's taken the Hokies to 18 bowl games and has won eight of them.

Beamer has the second most wins for active coaches in the NCAA and only Penn State's Joe Paterno is ahead of him.

Virgina Tech is considered one of the top teams in the conference, and it all starts with coach Beamer and the his staff that prepares week in and week out.

Beamer has won 67 percent of his games at Virginia Tech and they have been ranked every year since 1993.
