Conference Realignment: Texas Needs To Become an Independent
The Pac-12 just figured out what the Big 12 may conclude in the coming weeks. Texas is not worth the trouble. Texas should just do us all a favor and become an Independent, because they are as close to one already.
On Tuesday night, the Pac-12 decided not to expand, negating rumors they would envelope a great deal of the Big-12's marquee programs.
ESPN reports the elephant in the room was the petulant animal that would not budge. Texas would not share revenue among the conference, so the Pac-12 responsibly decided to move on as the stable conference they now are.
In all honesty, the Pac-12 doesn't need to expand, and they really didn't need to get into bed with Texas. The Longhorns have caused a myriad of issues from the day they created an ESPN-powered Longhorn Network.
Essentially, the Pac-12 has muttered thanks, but no thanks to a group of schools that are swimming in turmoil in the moment. The last thing this conference needed was a blight on their stability.
Now the Longhorns go back to the Big 12 drawing board. Only, this is a conference that initially had issue with Texas being far too big for the conference's britches.
When it comes to money and exposure, there is Texas, with Oklahoma in a close second. As the network gets off the ground, that chasm will only grow, widening the gap.
The report states a very real threat from the University of Oklahoma.
"Before the Pac-12's announcement, The Oklahoman reported that the University of Oklahoma would only commit to staying in the Big 12 if the conference added regulations on ESPN's Longhorn Network and ousted Beebe as commissioner.
"
The fact is, Texas is unwilling to give up many concessions when it comes to their network, and why should they?
They have gone a long way to secure what any other program would kill for. They don't need to give up revenue for a network driven by their immense popularity; they just need to leave the conference.
It is clear that there is not enough room in the Big-12 for Texas, Texas Longhorn Network and the other schools.
Two of those things need to take a hike. The easiest way to settle the stability issue is for Texas to conclude the journey they have been traversing for years. They are as close to an Independent as you can get. Now they need to make it official.
