College Football Realignment: Big 12 Must Oust Dan Beebe as Commissioner
According to ESPN.com, the Big 12 is holding a meeting to discuss Dan Beebe's future as the conference's commissioner.
In all honesty, why would the Big 12 want to keep him as the commissioner?
For one, the Big 12 has 10 teams. Ironically, the Big 10 actually has 12 teams. But that's a discussion for another day.
The Big 12 has 10 teams because Colorado and Nebraska have gone their separate ways. That's not exactly a step in the right direction.
Now, there is talk that the conference may fold, as the remaining 10 teams are looking to go elsewhere.
If you're the Big 12 Commissioner, Texas is your key. If Texas goes, other big schools go along with them. Basically, every league rival that plays in the state of Texas will follow the Longhorns, but it doesn't stop there.
Oklahoma also goes where Texas goes. Oklahoma State goes with the Sooners.
There has been talk that the realignment will separate Oklahoma and Texas. What it won't do is have either of them playing in the Big 12.
Has Beebe made any moves to try to bring in other schools? Well, nothing that's worked.
So, the Big 12 is falling apart. Schools can’t seem to get out fast enough.
The blame there falls on the commissioner.
As a commissioner, it’s your job to make your conference better. They have already lost two schools, and relatively big-name schools at that.
Now, a few questions persist.
One, if the Big 12 is going to dissolve, there isn’t much of a point in having a commissioner, is there?
Two, even if it doesn’t dissolve, its biggest schools have constantly threatened leaving. To me, that indicates a commissioner who is not doing a good enough job at making the schools feel as though their best future lies in the Big 12.
What’s the point of keeping a guy like that?
Now, am I saying it’s all his fault?
No, not exactly. Still, the talks have been about big name schools leaving the Big 12. Has anyone heard any talks of big name schools adding to the Big 12?
Too much has gone wrong in Beede’s tenure. It’s time for the Big 12 to shake things up. That won’t guarantee any success; but not shaking things up guarantees failure to the conference.
