College Football Rankings: 3 Undefeated Teams Bound for a Wakeup Call

Ryan RudnanskySep 21, 2011

It's one thing to be a ranked team.

It's quite another to play like a ranked team.

So far, three teams, despite undefeated records, haven't played the way they were projected to play coming into the season, and it's going to bite them sooner or later.

Here are three teams bound for a crash back down to Earth.

Virginia Tech (No. 13)

Sure, the Hokies are 3-0, but they haven't exactly played anyone of importance. On top of that, their 17-10 win over East Carolina was way to close for comfort. East Carolina had no business getting that close to a top-15 team, which only tells me one thing and that is Virginia Tech isn't a top-15 team.

Tyrod Taylor's successor at QB, Logan Thomas, has completed just 52 percent of his passes thus far and had two interceptions in his last game against Arkansas State.

I just don't think this team has the firepower to hang around. Look for a loss against No. 21 Clemson on Oct. 1.

West Virginia (No. 16)

Is there something in the water around Virginia? The Mountaineers may be 3-0, but they were trailing Norfolk State at half in Week 2 and barely edged out the Maryland Terrapins by six points in Week 3. No way are they the No. 16 team in the nation.

We all know quarterback Geno Smith is special, but beyond that, their running game is lackluster and their defense just showed what happens when they match up with a good offense, allowing 31 points against the Terrapins.

The Mountaineers play No. 2 LSU on Saturday. Gulp.

South Carolina (No. 12)

The South Carolina defense gave up 37 points to open the season against East Carolina, 42 points against Georgia and edged out Navy, 24-21, in Week 3. How they are the No. 12 team in the country is beyond me.

I understand they have running back Marcus Lattimore, who is a special player, but quarterback Stephen Garcia has been a disappointment so far, throwing three interceptions to just one touchdown in his last two games.

The Gamecocks can put up some points, but against a team like Auburn (Oct. 1) I don't think they can put up enough points to make up for their defense.
